Garrafão - Glass carafe

Dipped my nose into this and guess what?? After all these years, it still smells like Feni !😀

These glass carafe's now a rarity used to house feni back in the day.

Feni is Goa's indigenous alcohol made by distilling cashew extract.

Vicente Francisco da Silva

Lucky to get our hands on this limited edition book Benaulim and it's illustrious sons of the soil.

We were even more excited when we discovered it featured a Silva !

It mentions in the book that he was Councillor of the old senate of Salcete and Mayor of Municipality of Salcete . He held the post of Judge for Almotace and orphans and was representative of Salcete for the Provincial General Body and fellow of the Society of Geography of Lisbon.

We will always be grateful to our neighbour and old friend of the Silva's and now us, Senhor Adolf Dias for sharing with us his years of research and documentation.

As we scurry repairing the building, restoring the furniture, choosing suitable tiles, our chefs work on our menu and plating to give our guests a flavour of Goa.

But an aspect not explored enough has been Goa's garments.
I decided to try and understand a bit by getting my hands on this book MODA GOA by Wendell Rodricks, who researched many years to write this book.
We are looking to see how we can encapsulate a little of this fading heritage into our stays!

Time and again I like to post pictures of the house as we found it, everytime I am amazed that such a big space was used by just one family.
But with several children and household help , everyday life itself was tailored for large gathering's.
Like the picture that you see, is that of the 'Sala de Jantar' or the Dining Room with a table big enough to seat 24 guests at once.
Fine porcelain would adorn the built in cupboards.

Oh how busy the kitchen must have been!
