I am a old timer. I strongly believe in following the ancient rules of treating bamboo. Older methods have been there for centuries.
1. Cut only mature bamboo 4+ yrs old
2. Cut only during the dry season
3. Cut during the time of the month when the moon is on the wane. ie. Within the 5 days between full moon and the new moon.
4. Cut bamboo leaving a foot high stump.
4a. Run a metal rebar 8 mm through the fresh bamboo nodes to break them.
5. Within 72 hrs put bamboo in a stream with swift running water or sea water or soak them in a solution of borax, boric & water 1:3:10.
6. Leave for 4 weeks. Keep checking the solution level to make sure all bamboos are well submerged.
7. Take out the poles and dry in the shade for a, couple of weeks till the bamboo changes colour to golden and is well dried.
In some cases we soak in ponds with all the branches and leaves intact. During this time the leaves and yhe branches suck out all the starch leaving the bamboo well treated and no chance of any insect or pest attack.
All the best. This is slow ,steady and a sure method for bamboo to last minimum 200 yrs.

Bamboo enthusiastics in and around Kolkata are invited to work as volunteers at constructing a bamboo walk way on a 800' wide pond. The experiment is to prove to high end builders that Bamboo is beautiful, eco friendly, sustainable and long lasting. We want this walking path for morning walkers to feel the joy of walking on bamboo and it's connection to their health issues. How it activates the nerve endings on the sole of your feet to breakdown the unhealthy carbon deposits. For my own experience I feel 10 yrs younger everytime I walked on bamboo.

I used bamboo handle for broom makers in Guwahati some 10 yrs ago.

“If we take the cost of each broom to be Rs 35, then the cost for procuring the raw materials to make it comes to Rs 15, cost of making its handle is Rs 6, and then putting it together is another Rs 6. This total amount of Rs 27 is given to the tribal who makes it", says Indian Forest Services (IFS) officer Prasada Rao who has come up with an ingenious (and cheaper) idea to solve the plastic pollution caused by discarded brooms -- bamboo handles!

Why this matters? Because in India alone, almost 40,000 metric tons of plastic is used for broom handles. And inevitably, all of them end up in landfills.
