Manas National Park

Manas National Park Located at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Manas is the one of most stunning pristine wildlife habitats in Assam,India.
(93)

Against the backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas lies a grass and jungle habitat of unparalleled beauty. Tigers, elephants, golden langurs and Bengal Floricans share this exquisite wilderness with other rare and endangered species. The Manas forest extends on both sides of the river and presents one of earth's most timeless vistas. As you watch the magic unfold from the safe confines of the handsome

forest resthouse at Mothanguri, a herd of elephants may silently make an appearance on the distant opposite bank, lending a touch of the ethereal to an earthly paradise. Little wonder then, that Manas was chosen by UNESCO to be a World Heritage site. Home to the wild buffalo, elephant, tiger and rhino, Manas harbours the maximum number of endangered species from India as listed in the IUCN Red Book.

Save Western Manas Tiger Reserve. A massive massacre of a tropical moist deciduous forest is taking place in Ultapani a part of manas tiger reserve. This forest shelters a wide variety of wildlife, including golden langurs, tigers, elephants and several other species. Some parts of this forest were encroached around five years back. The erstwhile BTAD government took strong steps which ensured no further fresh encroachments. But from last one month another phase of massacre has been started. According to some local many outsiders are coming and destroying the forest to illegally settle there. The Forest department is playing the role of a mute spectator. Request for maximum share.

HUMAN ELEPHANT CONFLICT (HEC) AND SOME RECOMMENDING METHODS OF MITIGATION NEAR DIHIRA RESERVE FOREST :
Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) involves any form of interactions between man and wildlife that could bear a harmful effect on either human or wildlife population. The elephant is one of the most conflict- prone wildlife species in India, causing large- scale damage to crops and human lives as well as in Assam, habitat loss and the expanding of the human population drive the human-elephant conflict (HEC)
Most studies of best practice in human-wildlife conflict mitigation advocate the need to empower local communities and encourage them to take responsibility for preventive action
A variety of crop and property protection methods have been devised in Assam. We consider these to fall into three categories:

1) Early warning systems: to alert villages in advance that elephants are approaching (e.g. trip wire; watchtower)
2) Barriers: to prevent elephants from entering a particular area (e.g. trench; electric fence; chilli fence; buffer zone) and
3) Deterrents: to discourage elephants from entering an area and/or chase elephants away (e.g. chilli smoke; spotlights). Most of these methods work better in combination with one another and when used in irregular rotation, as elephants can become habituated to deterrents and have been known to outsmart barriers and early warning systems.
The following recommendations are offered for mitigating human–elephant conflict in NE India.

First, new protected areas need to be created.

Second, wherever possible, the existing protected areas should also be enlarged and fragmentation of protected areas should be discouraged

Third, elephant migration corridors should be legally protected. Corridors used regularly by the elephants should be given legal protection.

Fourth, encroachment should be strictly monitored. New encroachments should be discouraged or banned, especially in the reserve forestlands etc. (various sources)

From the wall of Dr Pranjal Bezbarua:

The chicken neck of the eastern buffer area of Manas tiger reserve needs special attention from the point of biodiversity conservation as well as mitigating human elephant conflict problem. The increasing pressure on the forests having evergreen and semievergreen characters has accelerated the drought and other climate change related problem in this Indo-Bhutan border area. As part of our continuing conservation programme, we could raise some small but need based climate smart items like solar torch and lamps with mobile charger facility and raincoats for conservation volunteers of our partner NGO Manas Sousi Khankar Ecotourism Society. Under the leadership of Bijoy Choudhury, the NGO have already restored more than 10 sq.km. of forests in Subonkhata reserve forests and Dihira proposed reserve forests apart from rescue wildlife and helping villagersto adapt to climate friendly lifestyle. And what could be the pleasant surprise for us when Dr. Anupam Sarmah and his team from North Bank landscape Project, WWF India joined us in our programme. Interestingly longback myself and my senior Dr. Anupam Sarmah did Ph.D. from the same botany department, Gauhati University. Also happy to meet Dr. Pijush Kuamr Dutta from WWF. We had also provided solar items, raincoats, rucksack, sleeping bags, alternative livelihood to the NGO and local villagers for restoring different habitat. Thank you Bijoy da, Amar Jyoti Hazarika, Himangshu Ramchiary for giving us the opportunity to be part of your biodiversity restoration programme. We understand we have very limited resource but will try to raise more support for restoring the landscape.
