The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was built by the British in 1908; the track rises at a gradient of 1 in 12 and has 208 curves and 13 tunnels. This is the only heritage train and runs at the highest elevated place in Southern India. The service comes under Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) and is a major tourist attraction.
This Nilgiri rail system is unique as it is the steepest one in Asia. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO during 2005.
