"THARON VILLLAGE : A NATURAL TOURIST HOTSPOT"

Despite the complacency of the government in taking initiatives to popularise and develop tourism destinations in the state, Tharon village with its enchanting natural beauty is rapidly becoming a tourist hot-spot.

Tharon village, located some 29 km from Tamenglong district headquarters, is the third largest village inhabited by people of Liangmai tribe with a total of 205 households. The village is surrounded by beautiful natural stones, caves, waterfalls and meadows.

Each of the places and items has its own unique and interesting story. Besides the historical village gates constructed with captivating stones locally known ‘Reng,’ Tharon village is also blessed with five scenic waterfalls including Alangtakhao, Ramphakhao, Alangna khuikao, Alangkhuikhao and Khangthingkhao. One can also find interesting looking stones in the village including a stone that looks like an elephant trunk and another like a human heart.

Another major tourist attraction is the famous ‘Tharon cave’ with two main entrances and five exit halls. The cave also features 28 chambers or halls which include enchanting upstairs and downstairs halls and the locally named lover’s hall, dancing hall and bats’ hall amongst others.

In an exclusive interview, the villagers of Tharon said that there could be more waterfalls and cave in the village area, but as they are tied up in earning their daily bread through hard labour, they could not find the time to explore them out.

Former chairman of Tharon village authority, Kindiabou Daimai stated that thousands of people have visited the village for site seeing in the recent past. But even though Tharon village is tourist hub, there is no guest house or water treatment facility for drinking water in the village.

Sources of natural water are plenty and the villagers draw their water directly from streams or rivers, and in spite of repeated requests to concerned authorities for safe drinking-water supply, the demands of the villagers remain unheeded.

Most of the people of Tharon village could not afford to build proper houses and live in shelters with thatch roofing. The villagers also informed that they receive electricity during dry season only and they have to rely on solar cells. Each family have their own solar- powered system to light the house, the villagers said.

K. Daimai also added that even though the village has two primary schools, a high school and a grant-in-aid school, there is hardly any teacher posted in the schools. The poor people of the village have to send their children for education to the district headquarters which is extremely hard considering the huge distance the children have to cover daily. He further mentioned that the villagers used to practice shifting cultivation but since it was not profitable, they have to sell forest produces for their daily needs.

In view of all these prevailing situations, Kindiabou Daimai made a request to the concerned authorities to look into the potential of tourism in Tharon village and develop it into a state tourist destination.
