Spot light on the Great Living Chola Temples -11th – 12th Century - Part 1

Built by the “king of kings, Rajaraja Chola (947 – 1014) and his son, Rajendra Chola (997 CE – 1064 CE) of the Chola Dynasty, the three temples in this spotlight are regarded to have “Outstanding Universal Value.”

The three temples are:

1) The Brihadisvara temple at Tanjavur
2) The Brihadisvara temple at Gangaikondacholapuram
3) The Airavatesvara temple at Darasuram

All three temples are living temples. Here, the tradition of temple worship and rituals established and practised over a thousand years ago, based on still older Agamic texts, continues daily, as an inseparable part of life of the people.

The great Cholas established a powerful monarchy in the 9th CE at Thanjavur and in its surroundings. They enjoyed a long, eventful rule lasting for four and a half centuries with great achievements in all fields of royal endeavour such as military conquest, efficient administration, cultural assimilation and promotion of art.

The Brihadisvara temple at Tanjavur was completed in 1010 CE and marks the greatest achievement of the Chola architects. The temple is just as much a symbol of power and wealth as it is a shrine to the Hindu god Shiva. Inscriptions—made on the walls detailing the ruler’s lavish gifts to the temple—are evidence enough of the wealth of the Chola dynasty. They list jewels, gold, silver, attendants, and 400 female dancers who were brides of Shiva. When the temple was constructed, it was the largest in India. Moving away from the small-scale design of earlier temples, it set the standard for a new age of grandiose design in the South Indian style of architecture. Its design also marks a shift toward larger and more ornate gateways, or gopuras, until they eventually overshadowed even the main shrine.

At a height of more than 200 feet (60 meters), the main shrine of the temple is the highest pyramidal shrine tower in south India. Legend says its domed cupola—which weighs more than 80 tons—was transported to the structure’s apex via a gently sloping ramp that was 4 miles (6.5 km) long.

You’ll explore all these temples and more on our fascinating tours of South India.

As we prepare to launch new travel adventures in exotic Sri Lanka, here's a spotlight on the Jewel of the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lanka might be small, but it’s an incredibly beautiful country with genuinely warm and hospitable islanders.

A true travellers delight!

In Sri Lanka, Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms date back thousands of years – the Sinhalese monarchy was arguably one of the world’s oldest continuing monarchy, with a continuous lineage that lasted over 2300 years until 1972.

It was pearls and glittering gems that bought the Arabs to trade with the Buddhist nation of Sri Lanka first. In the 15th century, the allure of spices and Cinnamon paved way for the Portuguese and the Dutch who built the first European forts on the Island. The British then followed, bringing tea, coffee, the railways and snooty clubs. This rich history has amalgamated into a diverse and vibrant culture, reflected in the country’s cuisine, architecture and way of life.

Today, Sri Lanka is home to hundreds of kilometres of picture-perfect palm lined beaches, rolling hills of tea plantations, temples and sites that date back millennia along which lie colonial mansions and ancient forests which boasts of the highest density of leopards and elephants in the wild. It is also a birders delight with over 400 different species of birds, many endemic. Whales – including the majestic Blue whale and dolphins populate the islands warm costal waters, and five of the world’s seven turtle species come to nest on the sands of Sri Lanka.

Come join on us a luxury adventure in Sri Lanka. Make memories you will cherish a lifetime.
