Air India To Operate 75 Flights To US, Canada Under Vande Bharat Mission
Source: NDTV

4-Jun-2020

New Delhi: Air India on Wednesday said it will operate 75 outbound passenger flights to select destinations in the US and Canada between June 9 and June 30 under the Vande Bharat Mission.
"Those who wish to travel to the United States and Canada and fulfill required entry conditions can book themselves on these outbound flights. Some foreign airlines have already carried out evacuation flights and are planning to operate more flights. These flights will also take foreign nationals," Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted.

He said the aforementioned 75 flights will go to destinations like New York, Newark, Chicago, Washington, San Francisco, Vancouver and Toronto.

Domestic passenger flights resumed in India from May 25 after a gap of two months due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown.

Scheduled international passenger flights continue to remain suspended in India.

The central government, however, started the Vande Bharat Mission from May 7 to bring back the stranded Indians from abroad through special inbound flights. It is for the first time that outbound flights have been included under the mission.

"Under Mission Vande Bharat, AI will be operating 75 flights from India to select destinations in USA and Canada from 9th to 30th June 2020. Bookings on these flights, ex India only, will tentatively be open from 1700 Hrs on 5th June 2020 only through Air India website," the national carrier said on its website.

Air India and its subsidiary, Air India Express, operated 64 flights under phase one of the mission. They plan to operate around 300 flights in the ongoing phase two of the mission to evacuate a total of 70,000 Indians stranded globally.

International flight may resume soon
Source: The Hindu

3-Jun-2020

DGCA and AAI planning to recommence operations to Europe, U.S., Canada.

After largely closing its airspace to commercial flights, the Ministry of Civil Aviation is contemplating to resume international flights by this month itself. Sources told The Hindu that the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) are weighing the options for recommencing international flights, especially to Europe, the U.S. and Canada.

However, any decision in this regard would be taken only in accordance with the lifting of travel restrictions imposed by other nations to control COVID-19. Several Non-Resident Indian (NRI) organisations and expatriates have been demanding resumption of the flights to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations.

Big demand

“Numerous people have been approaching us to restart the international flights. Several factors need to be addressed. Many international destinations are not allowing incoming passenger traffic except for their own citizens or diplomats,” Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister for Civil Aviation, tweeted on Monday evening.

Sources said some nations such as Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE have rolled back their lockdown measures. But these nations have not lifted the restrictions imposed on foreign residents. Flights are subjected to prior approval from the General Authority of Civil Aviation in Saudi Arabia and passengers have not been allowed to enter Kuwait.

Sources said NRIs holding valid residence permits in the UAE have approached the Ministry of Civil Aviation to work or business. India is willing to fly out people having valid documents to countries which are allowing foreigners to enter. But due to the travel restrictions, the evacuation flights to the UAE are going empty from India, the Minister said.

50,000 evacuated

Already more than 50,000 Indians have been evacuated through the Vande Bharat mission from first week of May. However, the number of passengers ferried by outbound flights is about 13,000 till now. Air India and its subsidiary Air India Express are now preparing to significantly increase the flights.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has laid down guidelines for the fifth phase of the lockdown to facilitate the gradual and calibrated reopening of the aviation sector. About 50% of the domestic flights will resume operation in the coming days.

Rajasthan's Monuments Re-Open for Tourism
Source: Outlook Traveller

2-Jun-2020

The Rajasthan government has announced that with restrictions being lifted under Lockdown 5.0, it will be reopening monuments under its archaeology and museum department for tourists, starting today.

All monuments—except those in containment zones and curfew areas—will be open four days a week for two weeks. Hours will be staggered at first, but from the third week onwards, tourists will be able to visit the monuments daily. We were in conversation with Sreya Guha, Principal Secretary for Tourism, Art and Culture, Government of Rajasthan, to find out more.

What brought about the decision to open the state up for tourism today?

We decided to open up since most states are now easing lockdown norms, so we expect some movement of visitors to start. We felt opening up our attractions would also give a sense of “returning to normalcy.”

What is opening for the public?

We have reopened the monuments under the Archaeology Department and the museums. We have also opened up the biological parks and wildlife safaris. The tiger reserves will be opened after NTCA clearance.

Are you expecting domestic tourism to pick up in a big way?

The first movement we are expecting is very local. To celebrate the reopening, the monuments will have free admissions in the first week. Now that interstate travel has opened, we expect visitors from neighbouring states to also come, but it will be a gradual process. Our focus now will be domestic tourism.

What are the protocols being followed and what precautions are being taken?

We have sanitised and fumigated all our premises. We have SOPs in place. We are ensuring all hygiene and social-distancing norms are followed.

How has the tourism suffered during this lockdown in terms of numbers and are there any additional schemes the state is introducing?

We have taken a hit of 100% turn down in business compared to March 2019, as footfall has totally dried up. There are currently 90% cancellations for bookings for the next season.

By industry estimates, revenue loss in hotels/restaurants and other travel services will be more than Rs 12-15 crore, and the loss of direct and indirect employment of over 10 lakh people is anticipated in next 3-4 months. There shall be loss in terms of GST to the state government estimated to be over Rs 2,000 crore, since the total contribution of tourism in the state GDP is around 22 to 25 per cent.

We are working closely with the industry to prepare for the coming season and planning strategies so that we are able to recover in 2021. We have been sanctioned a Tourism Development Fund, which we are trying to utilise to promote tourism, and create new products that will be more attractive in a post-pandemic tourism scenario.

Air India Cancelled 93 Fights Till May 31
Source: India.com

29-May-2020

New Delhi: Air India has cancelled around 92 flights scheduled between May 28 and May 31 as states have restricted the number of services their airports will allow during lockdown 4.0. However, there will be no extra charge levied on the flyers if they want to reschedule their flights till August 24, 2020, Air India has said.

After a gap of two months, domestic flight services began their operations from May 25. Union civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri had earlier said that though the ministry and the airports were prepared to resume the operations from May 15, the states were not ready to handle the inflow of the passengers coming from other states. As several states initially opposed to resuming operations questions have been raised whether states were not consulted before announcing the resumption of flight operations. The minister has confirmed that states were on board initially, but then some states took a step back given the rise in the number of the COVID-19 cases. States were also late in framing the standard operation protocols for quarantining the incoming passengers.

With West Bengal resuming its flight services from today — May 28 — all states are now connected via domestic flight operations — but in a restricted number. West Bengal, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu — the three states that objected to the resumption of the services — have largely curtailed the capacity of the airports. For example, Kolkata airport is only allowing 10 arrivals and 10 departures per day. Mumbai and Chennai airports are allowing only 25 arrivals and departures.

As a result, several scheduled flights had to be cancelled as there is no slot.

630 flights cancelled on first day

New Delhi, May 25

The first day of the resumption of domestic commercial flights in the country had its fare share of challenges, leading to chaos at almost all major airports as nearly 630 flights were cancelled due to states’ restrictions and airline operational issues. The confusion was further compounded by a variety of quarantine protocols by state governments, leaving several flyers high and dry.

The government had on May 21 announced the resumption of domestic flights from May 25 after a gap of nearly two months in the wake of the Covid-induced nationwide lockdown.

The two busiest airports Delhi and Mumbai witnessed cancellation of nearly 80 and 20 flights, respectively. Officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, said the cancellations were mostly on account of some states, including West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh, refusing to allow flight operations and also because of some operational issues like low load factor faced by airline operators.

“Around 80 flights to and from Delhi have been cancelled. The IGI airport was scheduled to handle a total of 125 departures and 118 arrivals today,” an official said. The Mumbai airport, the country’s second busiest airport after Delhi, was supposed to initially handle 175 flights daily. It curtailed them to 50 yesterday, and today further cancelled 20 flights.

Andhra Pradesh did not allow flight operations today; it will begin services from tomorrow while West Bengal will resume them from May 28. The two states have two airports each.

Smaller airports too had their share of cancellations, and had passengers complaining that they were not informed until they arrived at airports. Air India, in particular, has received criticism on social media for lack of communication with its passengers.

The airline, however, maintained that it could not disclose cancellations until two hours before the flight departure. But with the new SOPs dictating that passengers should arrive at least two hours before their flight, this means many turned up at the airport only to find out that there would be no flight.

Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri hailed the resumption of air travel by tweeting a live image of air traffic in the skies. “Indians soar in the skies again! A beautiful live capture from shows how our skies look busy again as domestic civil aviation recommences in India from today,” he said.
