Situated at 4,632 meters (15,197 ft) in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas, Hemkund Sahib is among the world’s highest Sikh Gurudwaras. Set beside the glacier-fed Hemkund Lake, it offers serene beauty and spiritual peace.

Route: Begins from Pulna (9.5 km to Ghangaria), then a steep 6 km trek to Hemkund Sahib.

Trail: Challenging switchbacks with waterfalls, wildflowers, and Himalayan views.

Access: Helicopter service runs from Govindghat to Ghangaria; ponies available for the elderly.

The Crafts of Uttarakhand book unveils the rich heritage of Himalayan craftsmanship, and the khukri craft stands as a shining example of artistry and utility. This iconic Gurkha knife, deeply rooted in tradition, is a testament to the skill and resilience of artisans in Uttarakhand and beyond.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁 & 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗞𝗵𝘂𝗸𝗿𝗶 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁: 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗵𝗶 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗷𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴
The Garhi Cantt area in Dehradun is one of the largest clusters forging the khukri in India. Here, both factories and small smithies are making the khukri. In the smithies, the khukri is made in parts, changing hands between blade makers, handle makers, polishers, scabbard makers, and packers. Garhi is a settlement of people of Nepalese origin who have been living in Uttarakhand for over two centuries. Some of the craftsmen are Nepalese citizens who come over to work owing to the open borders. Garhi is older than the other cantonment in Dehradun, which was set up by the British. The other khukri-making cluster is in Darjeeling, West Bengal, where the khukri is completely hand-wrought. Darjeeling is a Himalayan hill town inhabited by the Gurkha people, the traditional users of the knife.

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗵𝘂𝗸𝗿𝗶 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗨𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱
From the blade maker's workshop, the unpolished blade arrives at the handle maker's workshop for fitting the grip. Handles can be made from wood, horn or metal. The craftsman fits, carves and embellishes the handle, and then returns the khukri for polishing. Wooden and horn handles have a hole drilled down the centre through which the red-hot tang of the blade is inserted to create a tight fit. A horn handle extrudes melted cartilage on contact with the hot iron.
