Bohemian Adventures

Bohemian Adventures The Himalayas are our calling, passion and life. We live and breathe the mountains and they sustain The safety of our clients is our first priority.

Bohemian Adventures is a company founded by Anusha Subramanian, Shashi Bahuguna and Guneet Puri. The seeds of our friendship were sowed in 2009 in the mountains when we were both still pursuing our respective main stream careers. Over the next few years as we climbed together and very recently as we volunteered together during the Uttarakhand disaster we realised that it was in the Himalayas where

our calling lay. Our philosophy with regards to BA is simple, "of the mountains, for the mountains and by the mountains". We view the mountains as our home and as we do what we do best here, climb and trek, we also aim to give back to our home by providing a sustainable economic scenario to its residents. As far as possible we try to provide our clients a glimpse into the lives of the mountain folk, their culture and traditions with home stays along our trek routes. We have on our treks guides that are from the villages on our trek routes thus being able to provide them with a comprehensive insight into the traditions and folk lore of the area. This is achieved by having a minimum of 3:1 client to guide ratio and a group of no more than 12 on a trek (after all we are not here to herd cattle up the mountains). We also recce all our treks a week prior to taking our clients so that actual on ground eventualities may be accessed and provided for. All our treks have a 50-50 male-female guide ratio. And we also organise women only treks where all guides and trip leaders are women. Our vision for the years to come includes the promotion of women in the sport of mountaineering and trekking both as team leaders and guides. We also hope to lead by example by having stricter and more stringent safety guidelines implemented in the Himalayas.

As the climbing and trekking season starts...it ia important to understand acclamatisation in high altitude and why it is important. Acclimatization is key to making high-altitude trekking enjoyable rather than arduous. Acclimatisation is a process that can not be rushed, highlighting the importance of built-in rest days within trekking schedules to let the body adjust. Listening to your body is equally crucial. Everyone reacts differently to altitude, and recognizing early symptoms of discomfort can prevent more serious health issues. Being mindful of your body’s signals—such as dizziness or shortness of breath—can guide you to slow down, hydrate, or even descend, ensuring a safer and more pleasant trekking experience. Successful acclimatization and being attuned to your body’s needs are fundamental for a rewarding high-altitude adventure. They ensure trekkers can fully immerse in the beauty of their surroundings, safely pushing their limits without compromising their well-being.

We are thrilled to share the incredible journey of Pooja Bangyal, a woman of extraordinary determination and courage! 🙌
Pooja not only achieved an 'Alpha' grade in her Basic Mountaineering Course at the prestigious Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) in Uttarkashi but has also embarked on a remarkable career path as an adventure guide. 🏞️

First and foremost, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the for their invaluable support. Ian C., the CEO of HOPE Foundation and a fellow Chevener, had a visionary idea of sponsoring women to develop skills for alternative careers like trekking guides. This incredible initiative laid the foundation for Pooja's inspiring journey.

The HOPE Foundation's unwavering commitment to supporting women's aspirations through upskilling opportunities has played a pivotal role in Pooja's achievements. Their dedication to empowering women to realize their dreams and secure promising futures has been instrumental in Pooja's remarkable accomplishments.

Pooja, a married woman and mother hailing from the remote village of Dharchula in Uttarakhand, has always had a deep-seated passion for trekking. However, opportunities to pursue her dream were scarce. It was when she stumbled upon an advertisement from us on the NIM website that she decided to take the leap. 🌄

Pooja's journey has been marked by sheer determination and resilience. With the support of both Bohemian Adventures and the HOPE Foundation, she's been able to chase her dreams while balancing the responsibilities of marriage and motherhood.

Her decision to venture into a career as an adventure guide is truly commendable, showcasing her unwavering commitment to both her family and her aspirations.

Pooja's journey underscores a powerful message: Determination, support, and dedication can conquer any obstacle. It's a reminder to see life's challenges as opportunities to showcase our strength and resilience. Let Pooja's incredible journey inspire us all!

On a beautiful day hike on Saturday amidst nature's wonders in the Sahyadri’s, the inclusion of a 10 year old autistic child and his mother among a group of able bodied individuals unfolded into a remarkable display of acceptance and empathy. The group of 7 women embraced the child and his mother with open hearts and minds, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment throughout the journey.
Recognizing the unique challenges faced by the child, the group proactively accommodated his needs. They patiently listened to the mother's insights, seeking to understand her perspective and ensure the child's comfort and safety. The group members readily adapted to the pace and activities, creating an environment that allowed the child to fully engage and participate.
Throughout the hike, the able bodied women demonstrated a profound level of empathy towards both the child and his mother. They actively engaged with the child, employing patience and understanding in their interactions. They gave hi-if and encouraged the child. Their kindness and support were evident as they offered assistance, guidance, and encouragement whenever needed.
This day hike truly showcased the transformative power of empathy and inclusion. It serves as a beautiful reminder that when we embrace diversity and extend understanding to those who may experience the world differently, we create spaces where everyone can feel valued, accepted, and connected. This , I would say is Normalising Disability.
We at Bohemian Adventures are very happy to include everyone and give them the absolute outdoor experience.

09/06/2023

It was a memorable evening spent for the Bohemian girls in the esteemed company of legendary mountaineers Peter Hillary (Sir Edmund Hillary’s son), Jamling Tenzing (Tenzing Norgay’s son), and Sue Leyden, who is one of the daughters of Lord John Hunt (leader of the 1953 Everest expedition) and, other diplomats and dignitaries at the event Everest@70 celebrating the first ascent of Mt Everest jointly organised by the British High Commission and the New Zealand High Commission. I was also happy to showcase my views as part of an esteemed panel discussion 'Mountains to Move'.
Peter Hillary and Jamling Tenzing spoke about their fathers' first ascent and became heroes for the world. Sue Leyden, daughter of the late Lord John Hunt, reiterated the team effort of the 1953 expedition, something that is missing in the current times. Today, climbing Everest is more of an individual feat than a team effort.
While the first ascent opened doors for many more mountaineers to be on top of the world, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay spent the rest of their lives giving back to society. Norgay set up the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling. The Himalayan Trust UK was set up to support Sir Edmund Hillary’s work for the Sherpas in Nepal. Lord Hunt, leader of the 1953 expedition, was a patron of the Himalayan Trust UK until his death in 1998.
Jamling also spoke about how the spirit of outdoor learning and culture needs to be inculcated at the school level. He is an advocate for outdoor education to be implemented in all schools.
I specifically spoke about to the outdoors, as everybody has the right to be one with nature. When it is widely known that the outdoors is a great leveller and arena of learning, why is it that the vast majority of people are excluded from being a part of this great learning experience?
There is ample evidence that time in nature provides a range of physical, emotional, and mental benefits and can enhance a sense of belonging and self-confidence. Yet the people who need these benefits the most – the community, , and + —are often excluded from the .
The inaccessibility of built environments, the lack of affordable resources, and credible information, and the overall fear of not knowing how to deal with these marginalized groups both at home and in adventure communities have created these barriers to entry into the outdoors. I and my business partners at Bohemian Adventures have been able to recognize this need. It has to begin with giving people an opportunity. And this comes with lots of responsibility, as safety is paramount.
It is our endeavour to bring to the forefront. We are constantly striving to have a high level of training for our guides to make the outdoors more

It’s a common thought among able bodied people or even with persons with any kind of disability or a medical condition that it's impossible for them to do anything outdoors or pursue activities such as hiking or trekking in the high altitudes.

Having a health condition doesn't stop anyone from enjoying the outdoors. We have experienced this reality ourselves and have coped with pre-existing health conditions and today we at Bohemian Adventures have been on a mission to be able to take everyone to the mountains despite their medical conditions.

We are recently back from Hemkund Sahib (15500 ft) and Valley of Flowers Trek in Uttarakhand.
And this time around we had Krish Nair, a Person with Parkinson’s who completed both the treks and was healthy throughout. His motivation and confidence level increased with every step he took. Its been and amazing and fulfilling experience for us at Bohemian Adventures. As guides there have been a couple of learning on this trip and especially understanding the dos and don'ts of a person with Parkinson’s.

It’s not that Nair was not physically prepared. He plays golf and walks 6 miles atleast 3 days a week. But, in this case it was more of a case of high altitude and low oxygen challenging his Parkinson’s embattled brain. The low dopamine levels in one part of his brain that challenges his movement seemed almost at complete odds with the dopamine rush in his reward pathway that is motivating and pushing him forward.

We also realized that he probably could also well be the first Parkinson's person to have climbed Hemkund Sahib @15500 ft in Uttarakhand.

Outdoors are a great leveler and it builds immense confidence in people and especially those who have been told they cannot or who have a self doubt that they cannot because they have some issue.

It is the openness, level of training and experience of the guides that makes this possible. We at Bohemian Adventures are constantly striving to have high level of training for our guides to make the outdoors inclusive for all.
