Gokarna, Karnataka – a much less touristy alternative to Goa.

Further up the coast from the famous tourist state of Goa is the much more understated Karnataka region, with Gokarna as the jewel in its crown. It’s relaxed vibe and stunning beaches has made it a popular place for yoga schools and retreats as well as backpackers. Pilgrims and visitors alike also love the Shivaratri and Ganesh Chaturthi festivals that are held here.

While Gokarna town beach is nothing to write home about, the nearby Kudle Beach is a beautiful place where people (and cows) play volleyball and sing until the sun goes down. From there it’s a short walk to Om Beach, named as it’s shaped like the famous symbol. Further on is Small Hell Beach and Paradise Beach.

Every night travellers sleep under the stars on Paradise Beach, watching the moon when it’s bright, and the bioluminescence in the sea when there are clouds in the sky and its dark.

Azhimala Shiva temple, Kerala, India

The temple is noted for its 58-ft-tall statue of Lord Shiva in the Gangadhareswara form, all made in concrete. The massive structure with Shiva's hair flowing in the wind and holding Goddess Ganga has a charm of its own and lends a magnificent appeal to the temple. The sculpture was created by a 29-year-old artist P. S. Devadathan who is a native of Azhimala.

Valley Of Flowers, Uttarakhand

With over 300 species of wild flowers, the Valley of Flowers is truly a paradise. The valley is part of The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Park are part of UNESCO World Heritage List. The Valley is about 5 km long and around 2 km wide. Staying true to its name, it is home to flowers like, anemone, geranium, Himalayan blue poppy, brahma kamal, rhododendrons, and epilobium. Most flowers are claimed to have medicinal value. A “Ramayana” legend states that lord Hanuman gathered “Sanjeevani Buti” (the herb which cured war wounded Lakshman) from this valley. This place also has a variety of butterflies, musk deer, Himalayan bear, Himalayan mouse hare, blue sheep (bharal), snow leopard etc.
