Ahhichatragarh Fort literally translates into ‘fort of the hooded cobra’ is situated in Nagaur. Spread over 36 acres, the fort was in a state of neglect till the 1980s.

In 1985 the fort was placed in the care of the Mehrangarh Museum Trust.

The fort has gradually been restored to its former glory with the support of four grants from the Getty Foundation, two from the UK-based Helen Hamlyn Trust and contributions from the Mehrangarh Museum Trust.

The Palaces and historic spaces display period furniture, objects and an amazing group of wall paintings.

In 2002 the Fort of Nagaur won the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Culture Heritage Conservation.

It was also shortlisted for the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2011-2013. The Nagaur Fort hosts the World Sacred Spirit Festival every year.

Perched above the rolling waves of the Arabian Sea, tranquil Niraamaya can captivate guests for days on end.

The hotel’s culinary programme is exceptional, and the hotel customises cooking classes to showcase dishes or ingredients to please each guest.

For the real sea-to-table experience, accompany the chefs to the dock to select a fish to prepare for dinner. The team can then arrange candlelit dinner in the yoga pavilion overlooking the sea or on a secluded strip of beach.

The Niraamaya Spa alone is worth a journey, and books up well in advance. The menu of à la carte treatments has enough to please any spa enthusiast, but the ultra-devoted can join month-long retreats for maximal relaxation.

Niraamaya’s remote location is part of its appeal, but there are plenty of activities nearby for those eager to explore the best of Kerala.

Varanasi is the India of your imagination. This is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities, and one of the holiest in Hinduism.

Pilgrims come to the Ganges here to wash away sins in the sacred waters, to cremate their loved ones, or simply to die here, hoping for liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

Most visitors agree Varanasi is magical – but not for the faint-hearted. Intimate rituals of life and death take place in public, and the sights, sounds and smells of the mazelike old town can be intense.

Still, the so-called City of Light is one of the most colorful and fascinating places on earth.

Strolling the ghats or watching sunrise from a boat on the Ganges are a highlight, and confronting the reality and ritual of death can be a powerful experience.

Kolkata, or Calcutta as it was formerly called, is the present capital of the eastern state of West Bengal and one of the most densely populated cities in India.

Kolkata became a British trading post in the last part of the 17th Century. The city that once served as the showpiece capital of the British power in India is noted for its colonial buildings including the grand Victoria Memorial.

Other important sights include the Howrah Bridge, an engineering marvel that links the city and Howrah Station, and the Indian Museum.

Gateway to eastern India and home to prominent intellectuals, the city is known for its easy pace and intellectual prowess.

Stucco Art of South India.

As the tradition dictates, this stucco sculpture is not ‘signed’ by anybody neither, even though it is not that old. The sculptors knew stucco techniques for millennia. Some historians opine that the pyramids were plastered white.

The Greeks and Romans are known to have used stucco in constructions and sculptures. It must be during this period that Sangam-era Tamils learned this technique from the maritime traders.

Numerous imperial Chola period temples have their façades decorated using this technique. With the invention of Portland cement in 1843, the traditional method of making lime-based stucco was replaced by cement-based ones.

The drawback of cement stucco is that its life-span is low compared to that of plastered stucco. The first cement factory in India was established in Madras (now Chennai) in 1904, and within a decade, it became popular due to its low cost.

Since then, this sort of painted cement sculptures has been decorating the façades and premises of the new temples, standing in stark contrast to the granite and bronze sculptures that were carved to withstand for long period.

Who wouldn’t be interested in a giant, crispy Indian-style crepe?

Dosa is very similar to a crepe and is a very popular street food in India. Dosa is famous for its simple ingredients, interesting flavors, and even its sweet aroma.

Love it for how easy and clean the ingredients are. It can be eaten as a snack, as breakfast, or really anytime you’re in the mood!

Originating in southern India, Dosa has been around since the 5th century AD. It’s said that Dosa was first referenced by Chalukya King Somesvara III in Tamil literature in 1054 AD.

Like many Indian foods, Dosa has many different variations depending on region and occasion.

View of Kanchenjunga peak from Tashi viewpoint in Gangtok of Sikkim.

Sikkim was its own mountain kingdom till 1975 and still retains a very distinctive personality.

The meditative, mural-filled traditional monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism coexist with Hindu shrines of the ever-growing Nepali community, with both religions creating some astonishing latter-day megasculptures to adorn the skyline.

Hassle-free and warm-hearted, it's a state that's all too easy to fall in love with, explaining perhaps why permit regulations prevent foreigners staying too long or going too far.

Clean, green and 'all organic' since 2016, Sikkim is mostly a maze of plunging, supersteep valleys thick with lush subtropical woodlands and rhododendron groves, rising in the north to the spectacular white-top peaks of the eastern Himalaya.

When clouds clear, an ever-thrilling experience from many a ridge-top perch is spotting the world's third-highest mountain, Khangchendzonga (8598m), on the northwestern dawn horizon.

Stretched majestically along the top of a 3km-long plateau overlooking Gwalior, the fort is a dominant, unmissable sight, full of fascinating palaces, temples, museums and other buildings.

Much of the fort is now occupied by the prestigious private Scindia School, established by Maharaja Madho Rao Scindia in 1897 for the education of Indian nobility.

There are two approaches to the fort, both uphill treks. Vehicles can drive up the west side through the Urvai Gate, but this approach is an anticlimax compared with the formidable view of the fort from the eastern approach, which is well worth the walk.

Don’t, however, miss the rock sculptures part way down the western side.

Jaisalmer – The home of the Thar Desert, is a place that is located bang in the desert located close to the magnanimous Jaisalmer Fort.

The Gadisar Lake was built by the Raja Rawal Jaisal, as a perennial source of water in the arid Jaisalmer.

The Gadisar got its name from Maharawal Gadsi Singh who renovated this beautiful lake.

The lake is one of the go-to places for witnessing the sunrises and sunsets and makes for a perfect place to spend time in tranquillity and peace.

Today, the lake offers scintillating views of the serene and peaceful environment around the lake and is one of the most frequented places in Jaisalmer by locals and travellers alike.

The distant view of the Jaisalmer Fort is also mesmerising which stands atop the mountains gloriously.

There are also chhatris located in the middle of the lake, where you can take a boat ride and spend some time admiring the pristine beauty of the lake.

Chilika Lake - Asia's largest brackish water lagoon.

The vast and dream like Chilika Lagoon is situated on the east-coast of India. It is the largest brackish Water Lagoon with estuarine character that sprawls along the east coast. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory waterfowl found anywhere on the Indian sub-continent.

It is one of the hotspot of biodiversity in the country, and some rare, vulnerable and endangered species listed in the IUCN Red List of threatened Animals inhabit in the lagoon for atleast part of their life cycle.

Chilika is an integral part of the culture of coastal Odisha.

Chilika supports some of the largest congregation of migratory birds in the country, particularly during the winter.

Flocks of migratory waterfowl arrive from as far as the Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, Aral Sea, remote parts of Russia, Kirghiz steppes of Mongolia, Central and South East Asia, Ladakh and the Himalayas, to feed and breed in its fertile waters. In 1989-90 an estimated two million birds visited the Lake.

India is also where you will find the Bishnoi people - men and women ready to die for trees and animals. The Bishnois' dedication to protecting wildlife is unparalleled.

Bishnoi women breastfeed orphaned antelope fawns, and men patrol the land to ensure no animal is harmed or hunted.

The community believes in - "sir santhe rukh rahe to bhi sasto jaan" meaning "even if our head gets chopped off to save a tree from being cut, it is a small sacrifice for us."

Still surrounded by crumbling city walls and three surviving gates, the vibrant, bustling Shahjahanabad,.

Built over a period of 10 years by Emperor Shah Jahan, is very much a separate city -- predominantly a labyrinth of tiny lanes crowded with rickshaws, and lined with 17th-century havelis (Indian mansions), their balustrades broken and once-ornate facades defaced with rusted signs and sprouting satellite dishes.

Old Delhi is inhabited by a predominantly Muslim population whose lives revolve around work and the local mosque, much as it was a century ago.

'At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom…’

This historic speech marked India’s independence from British rule and simultaneously made the Red Fort in Delhi a politically significant monument, which now acts as the setting for the independence day celebrations each year.

However, the Red Fort has been a strategically important monument through the ages, due to Delhi being the capital city for a good part of the Mughal rule in India.

Delhi’s history is often spoken of in terms of its seven cities.

These were fortified settlements, established by various rulers between the 11th and 17th centuries, now swallowed by the sprawling city of today.

The sixth Delhi is the Purana Qila, or Old Fort, a 16th-century stone fort near the eastern edge of the city, and a particularly good place from which to tell the story of Delhi’s urban development.

After the partition of India in 1947, the Qila sheltered thousands who were fleeing Delhi, as well as those who had moved there. Many remained until the early 1960s.

We are coming up soon with Heritage walks in Delhi!

Picturesque and elegant, Udaipur is known by many names, including “the City of Lakes”.

Undoubtedly one of India’s most romantic cities, it nestles between the glassy waters of its famous lakes and the ancient Aravelli Hills.

Although it is one of Rajasthan’s largest cities, modern Udaipur manages to retain a charming small town vibe.

At the heart of the city lies the serene Lake Pichola, with the Old City sprawled along its east bank.

Built along a series of gentle hills, narrow winding streets, full of abrupt twists and turns, give way to spectacular marble palaces, hibiscus-laden gardens, sparkling fountains and pavilions. This dreamy destination has inspired many an artist and literary enthusiast.

Thiksey Monastery is one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh, northern most state of India.

This monastery is often compared with the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet on account of its general appearance, as it occupies the entire south face of a hill.

At the top of the monastery are buildings painted red and yellow followed by a tumbledown of small one-room box-like houses for the lamas, which are punctuated by large rectangular buildings at intervals.

Today, the entire monastery area is well laid-out with a large walled compound at the foothill and several small structures to hold the annual Photang ceremony.

The route leading up to the monastery is line with chortens (stupas) and mane (prayer) walls.

Bharatpur is famous for its wonderful Unesco-listed Keoladeo National Park, a wetland and significant bird sanctuary.

This tremendous bird sanctuary and national park has long been recognised as one of the world’s most important bird breeding and feeding grounds.

In a good monsoon season over one-third of the park can be submerged, hosting over 360 species within its 29 sq km.

By far the best time to visit this park is October to February, when you should see many migratory birds.

At other times, or even after poor monsoon conditions, it can be dry and relatively bird-free

If here for the park, the city also has a few historic vestiges and a good museum worth visiting too.

Bharatpur hosts the boisterous and colourful Brij Festival just prior to Holi celebrations.

THE 953 WINDOWS COVERING THE lace-like facade of the Palace of the Winds were designed to allow the ladies of the royal court to watch the drama of the streets unobserved behind their delicate latticework.

Known as Hawa Mahal in Hindi, the Palace of the Winds was constructed in 1799 for Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh as part of the women’s section of the enormous City Palace at the center of Jaipur.

The facade we see from the street is essentially an enormous screened porch, one room deep in most places.
