Let My Country Awake

Where the mind is without fear
and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been
broken up into fragments by
narrow domestic walls;
Where the words come out from
the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches
its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason
has not lost its way into the dreary
desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee
into ever-widening thought and action –
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father,
let my country awake.

On 15th August this year, we HOPE! Hope for a better tomorrow - On this date in 1947, the nation declared its independence from the 200-year British rule. This historic occasion honours the transition from the confines of colonial control to the lofty heights of sovereignty. As the tricolour flag flutters in the breeze and the echoes of the national anthem reverberate through the air, Independence Day becomes more than a date on the calendar – it becomes a symphony of remembrance, a tribute to the sacrifice, and a celebration of unity.

In 1979 after his Master’s, Mandip Singh Soin took a gap year and travelled across Europe gaining skills in the outdoors mainly mountaineering, skiing and trekking. During that time, he had chance encounters with some of the leading climbers in Italy who opened their hearts and homes to him, leading him to many more in the Courmayeur region. One of these was with an incredible mountaineer, human being and priest, Don Arturo Bergamaschi. In turn, he was to become the first client of Ibex Expeditions, only to return year after year for many a climbing and trekking expedition in the Indian Himalaya with Ibex as the outfitter. Today, we bid farewell to Don Arturo as he embarks on the next journey of life to heaven to become the brightest star tonight. Born in Savignano sul Panaro, in the province of Modena on 8 November 1928. He graduated from the University of Bologna in Mathematics and Physics. He was a teacher of Mathematics and Physics first at the Regional Seminary of Bologna and then at the Liceo Classico of the San Luigi Institute of Bologna, and finally, from 1975 to 1995 at the Scientific and Linguistic Liceo of the Malpighi Institute of Bologna. Spiritual assistant in the House of Divine Providence Mamma Nina in Carpi, at the Diocese of Bologna, he was involved in various spiritual movements. Every year since 1970 he organized and guided mountaineering and scientific expeditions and treks in every part of the world, achieving remarkable results both from a sporting, medical and scientific point of view.

Go gently dear Don Arturo Bergamaschi

70 years ago, on May 29th 1953 Sir Edmund Hillary with Tenzing Norgay ascended Mt Everest 29, 002 feet becoming the first climbers to reach the highest mountain of the world. We celebrate this achievement of theirs and urge all mountaineers to tread lightly on this mountain with care and training so that we can preserve it forever and not hear of tragedies due to over crowding at crucial points on the climb. The mountain environment is precious to all of us and we at were inspired by these early explorers to begin across the Himalaya in 1979.
