The food of Delhi is renowned across the country for its spicy and tangy flavors, but there’s a fascinating tale behind this culinary tradition. During the Mughal era, when Shah Jahan moved his capital from Agra to Shahjahanabad, his personal physician, or ‘haqim,’ expressed concern about the Yamuna River’s water being unfit for consumption. Shah Jahan, however, couldn’t abandon his newly established capital and sought a solution.

The physician suggested consuming highly spiced food, acknowledging the water’s quality. However, continuous intake of spicy food could lead to health complications. To counteract this, he recommended incorporating ample ghee to counterbalance the spices’ effects. Consequently, non-vegetarians began using more spices and butter, while vegetarians developed a diverse array of dishes, including the iconic ‘Chaat,’ featuring chili peppers, sourness, and spices.

This historical context birthed Delhi’s renowned Chaat, drawing admirers from distant corners. Even today, the streets of Shahjahanabad retain a rich variety of delectable chaats, preserving this flavorful tradition for generations to come.

The Story of Jangpura: From Khairpur to Delhi’s Bustling District

There would be times, when you have been to jangpura metro station and surely the name gave you the image of battleground or some associations with war. Fortunately there is nothing like that. Let’s see what’s really in the name.

We start our journey from nearby Lodhi Garden. As we enter the gates of Rajesh Pilot Marg (formerly known as South End Road), we come across a plaque that sheds light on the area’s past.

Apparently, this land was once known as Willingdon Park. But after 1947 it was renamed as Lodhi Garden. The plaque also mentions that there was once a village called Khairpur here. However, the villagers were relocated in the early 1900s under the supervision of a British officer, Charles Young, to a new settlement called “Youngpura”.

Over time, “Youngpura” evolved into the name we know today - Jangpura . It is as if the displaced villagers left their mark on the place and transformed it with resilience and adaptability.

Jangpura remained a relatively ordinary place until the partition of India. Then everything changed. Hundreds of Hindu and Sikh refugees from Punjab, especially the city of Rawalpindi, flocked to the area and made it their new home.

This influx of people made Jangpura an integral part of Delhi’s diverse community. The identity of the place was shaped by the stories and experiences of these hardy newcomers.

So the next time you hear the name Jangpura, remember its fascinating journey - from a lost village of Khairpur to a vibrant, multicultural district. know today It shows the adaptability and flexibility of the human spirit.
