TDW shares: Stopped at a dhaba (described later) to eat paranthas (indian bread) filled with paneer (cottage cheese) and gobi (cauliflower). Eaten with white butter and curd and if needed mint chutney.

The origins of Dhaba culture can be traced back to the days of the silk road, when traders and travellers would stop at these simple, roadside eateries for a hot meal. Over the years, dhabas have evolved to become an integral part of Indian culture, and they're now a common sight on Indian highways.

Dhabas were characterised by mud structures and cots to sit upon (charpai) while eating. A wooden plank would be placed across the width of the cot on which to place the dishes. With time, the cots were replaced by tables. The food is typically inexpensive and has a 'homemade' feel to it.

TDW tours: Nizamuddin Dargah is the dargah (mausoleum) of the Sufi saint Khwaja Nizamuddin Auliya (1238 - 1325 CE). Situated in the Nizamuddin West area of Delhi, the dargah is visited by thousands of pilgrims every week. The site is also known for its evening qawwali devotional music sessions.

Women are not allowed to enter the dargah, where Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya rests, because it is believed the dead can see women naked if they go too close. While men are allowed inside the south Delhi shrine, women have to pray, kneel and kiss the wall behind the grave of the Sufi saint

Amir Khusrau was a spiritual disciple of Nizamuddin Auliya, a prolific classical poet associated with the royal courts of more than seven rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. He wrote many playful riddles, songs and legends

The street is also known for some delicious street food, take a walking tour to discover this and much more

TDW celebrates: Sibling love.
Raksha Bandhan - 'knot of protection' is
a festival that celebrates the relationship shared between brothers and sisters. The sister ties a rakhi (thread) on her brother's wrist and he makes a lifelong promise to protect her. If he doesnt he'll be accountable 😊😊 just kidding.
Nowadays there are all kinds of rakhis - cartoon ones, food rakhis, rakhis with politician's faces etc etc.

The history for the ones who want to know more:
The most famous story is of Rani Karnavati of Chittor and the Mughal Emperor Humayun. She was the widowed queen of Chittor who had been attacked by Bahadur Shah, Sultan of Gujarat. The queen realised that defending her empire from the invasion was not possible for her and in lieu of protection and help, she sent a Rakhi to the Mughal Emperor, Humayun.

On receiving the rakhi, the Emperor was overwhelmed and became emotional. He along with his troops, immediately set out to protect Chittor from the invasion. He could not reach on time. The Sultan of Gujarat had by then reached the queen's fortress. All the women in the fortress including Rani Karnawati, had performed Jauhar (mass su***de) by then. Humayun, on reaching the fortress, fought with Bahadur Shah and evicted him from the
land. The empire was handed over to Rani Karnawati's son, Vikramjeet Singh. Since then, the act of a sister tying a rakhi on the wrist of her brother indicates lifelong protection from him.

TDW tours: Enjoying a cup of tea at a old tea shop in Old Delhi with

Interestingly tea was introduced formally to Indians by the British who intended to overthrow China's monopoly on tea. They found that Indian soil was eminently suitable to cultivate these plants and in 1830s, the first tea estates were established in Assam using tea plants brought from China.

Chai is the word for tea in Hindi and comes from the Mandarin word chá.
Also we Indians love to add our touch to things so we created masala chai. Masala simply means spice. No Indian can live without masala in their lives :).

From TDWs den: The golden temple, harmandir sahib, is located in amritsar, india is the preeminent spiritual site of sikhism.
It is not only a large temple but being surrounded by other white temples and the moat adds to its overall beauty. Built in 1577, the temple's dome is gilded with 750 kg of pure gold.

One of the finest example of indian and mughal architectural style.

Over 100,000 people visit the holy shrine daily for worship and the free community kitchen at the golden temple feeds 50,000 people a day which is also the largest free kitchen in the world.

Saluting the sikh community for always serving the society.
