After a happy World Cup all-nighter, only a few made it to the walk today. But the following looked gorgeous even to our sleepy eyes -the 14th century madrasa, the very khas water body and the tomb of a ruler, whose name is closely associated with the game that kept us all up last night.
On our today.
(The walkers who didn't wear pretty clothes, didn't get clicked. Really).

10 degrees. We felt it was at least 10 degrees cooler at the water front, under the bridge built by Akbar, than rest of the city. Steinabad in general is cooler than most other parts because of extensive greenery. But who was Stein? And why all the noise about Native trees? And much more on our walk today.

My father-in-law was in the Air Force. He feels very sad that as a young officer, he couldn’t buy his son many things. His son remembers those very same days with much joy – when he got to live in interesting places across the country, play a lot and have fun.
As I prepare my annual session for a group of students in Germany, who study Sustainability as part of their Innovation course, I want to avoid every possible jargon as they think of Sustainable Businesses and Products. And simply focus on ‘Long-term’, ‘Happiness’ and ‘Health’.
Because all that above son remembers, are fun evening walks and the fairy lights they ‘created’ for some project, which still adorns (!) their verandah after 30 years. Nothing, of things that he did or did not receive.
So NO, yet another resource intensive Solar Plant or Biodiversity killing Hydropower Plant, to fuel unthinking increase in per capita consumption, will not make it a Happy Environment Day.
(Heart-breakingly, the quote by Founding Director of Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, does not apply to most of the students I work with. They don’t want to bring children into this world).

Approx 1.5 g of CO2 per minute of scrolling plus tonnes of CO2 of Air-conditioning saved ( and more on other appliances), every time we are out in nature in summers. Plus helps getting back to doing what humans are meant to do- connect with others and be happy.
On our heat-wave proof yesterday.

Burning hot in most of India. Constant use of DG sets and ACs and concrete-glass heat islands further heating up air and pockets.
Then there is the traditional hay/vetiver evaporation, fed by water cooled under ground. Working at 1/10th electricity and not drying up our insides and creating constant hunger pangs (read up on dehydration and hunger pangs), among other things.
Is the post rain humidity the reason we don't consider traditional cooling techniques that used to keep whole of central Asia cool, anymore?

I mean there is no other justification for 5 years of sleeplessness followed by lifetime of poverty !

The thing about Buddha Jayanti Park is that those who live around, are very proud of it. You will be stopped every few minutes by a regular Walker, and told about the fabulousness of its 100 acres. And it warms my heart to see so many people feeling such a strong sense of ownership for this space.
It is rather fabulous. Go visit. And don't forget to have tea and cutlet at the Jungle cafe with super friendly staff.
