Karste khar is located near Sankoo in the Kargil district of the Ladakh. The village nearby goes by the name Karste Khar wherein there is a 7 meter rock-carved statue of Maitreya Buddha. The place offers a grand view of the surrounding valley and the landscape.

Tourist Places to Visit in Kargil Ladakh.

1) KARGIL MAIN STREET
is a small place in a remote part of the country. Hence it does not boast of luxurious shops or markets. Nevertheless, the Kargil main street is quite an interesting place to explore. There are small dry fruit shops, eateries etc in the lanes and by lanes of this charming little town. There are also souvenir shops where travellers can pick up a souvenir of their adventurous trip.

2) SURU VALLEY
Suru Valley is famous not just as the most fertile, but also as the most picturesque valley in all of Ladakh. The Suru River runs through the valley, which is dotted with scenic villages.

3) MUNSHI AZIZ BHAT MUSEUM OF CENTRAL ASIAN AND KARGIL TRADE ARTIFACTS

set up in the quaint town of Kargil aspires to keep a slice of history for posterity. The private museum run by two brothers Aijaz Hussain Munshi and Gulzar Hussain Munshi showcases its rare, unseen and antique artefacts related to the Central Asian Trade. Hubble Bubble or the ho**ah pipes from Yarkand, rugs from Kashgar, fabrics — dyed and raw silk from Khotan in China, natural dyes, costumes, jewellery, coins, shoes, utensils, ammunition and a few photographs are few out of the 100-plus objects that are exhibited.

4) APATI BUDDHA STATUE
Apati is a small village in the Ladakh some 16 km away from Kargil. The village was in possession Pakistan till 1971 when it was wrestled off by India in the 1971 war. The Maitreya Buddha at Apati is a large sculpture of Maitreya (Future Buddha) carved into the mountain side

5) MULBEKH MONASTERY
There are many things about Mulbekh Monastery that make it a popular tourist attraction in Kargil, one of which is its location.

6) DRASS WAR MEMORIAL
This is a must visit place in Kargil. Following the Kargil War, a war memorial was created in commemoration of the Indian soldiers.

7) KARGIL PENSI LA LAKE
Pensi La serves as a mountain pass and a gateway to Padum. Padum is the headquarters of Zansjar division of Kargil district. Pensi La is worth visiting for the absolutely gorgeous and stunning view that it offers tourists of Drang Drung Glacier, glacial lake and Suru River Valley.

8) RANGDUM MONASTERY
Rangdum Monastery resembles more a fort than a monastery, much of which is because it sits atop a mountain on an outcrop.

9) SHARGOLE MONASTERY
Situated just 10 Kms ahead of Mulbekh, the Monastery is located in Shargole village. The old monastery is very famous in the village especially among the local people. This is one of the man-made wonders in the wilderness.

10) THE KARATE RIVER AND THE KARATE VALLEY
located near Sankoo in the Kargil district of the Ladakh. The village nearby goes by the name Karste Khar wherein there is a 7 meter rock-carved statue of Maitreya Buddha. The place offers a grand view of the surrounding valley and the landscape.

11) LANG TSO & STAT TSO LAKES
The twin lakes, Lang Tso and Stat Tso, lie just around the corner of Pensi La Pass, which connects Zanskar Valley to Zuru Valley.

12) PHUKTAL MONASTERY
Phuktal gompa or monastery, a significant Buddhist monastery located in the Lungnak Valley that too very remotely from the main town and this one is reachable only by walking. The essential things for the monastery will be carried by animals during summer days and during winter they will be transported through the frozen Zanskar River.

13) ZANSKAR VALLEY
Also known locally by the name of Zahar, Zanskar is a small district in Kargil, located in the eastern section of Ladakh. Zanskar Valley is eternally famous for its high snow capped mountains and surrounding landscape, featuring geographical attributes that are unique to this region.

14) SANI MONASTERY
located next to the village of Sani at a distance of 6 kms from Padum and approachable by a 2 hour gentle walk. It is thought to be the oldest religious site in the whole region of Ladakh and Zanskar. The Monastery also has a nunnery. built during reign of Kushan king Kanishka, around 2nd century BC, when Budhhism was still developing in Himalayan or Tibetan region.

14) CHADAR TREK
For some years, adventure seekers all around the world have been talking about Chadar Trek in the Zanskar Region. Until this year, hundreds of people have experienced the thrill hidden and the mind blowing sights around Chadar frozen river. In fact, Chadar Trek is the most sought after and one of the breathtaking treks in the Himalayas. The winter trek is so special for those who are ready to have adventure at the maximum level.
