My last piece of the year. A wrap-up for ETTravelworld

Tourism is an industry that is in the middle of a whirlpool of emotions. Nothing is ever static. Every day unfolds a new story with new challenges and also new opportunities. But I can be sure of one thing. We who depend on tourism for our livelihood are an obstinate, resilient, and thick-skinned lot. We thrive on adversities and have always come out of the deepest pits with a grin on our faces. No matter what nature throws at us or whatever the government does or does not do, we have stood fast in front of every challenge, and I know in 2024, we will not only continue to do so but will be done with optimism and vigour.

So here is raising a toast to all of us for a wonderful, exciting, happy and fun-filled year ahead. Let's work together to make it happen.

21/12/2023

The Indian Purple Frog, scientifically known as Nasikabatrachus Sahyadrensis, commonly referred to as the purple pig-nosed frog, belongs to the Nasikabatrachus genus. This frog species is exclusively found in the Western Ghats of India. Even though the formal description of the adult frog was published in October 2003, the juvenile form had been documented as early as 1917.

The specimens used for the species description were collected in the Idukki district of Kerala by S.D. Biju from the Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute in Palode, India, in 2003. It’s noteworthy that residents were already familiar with the species, and earlier documented specimens and publications were overlooked by the authors in the 2003 paper introducing the genus and species. Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis is considered to be closely related to the Sooglossidae, a family known only in the Seychelles, an island chain in the Indian Ocean.

The scientific name, Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis, is a combination of Latin and Sanskrit, where “nāsikā” (नासिका) means “nose” in Sanskrit, “batrachos” (βάτραχος) means “frog” in Greek, and Sahyadri is the native name for the Western Ghats, which serves as the natural habitat for the purple frog.

One of its colloquial names, the purple pig-nosed frog, alludes to the elongated shape of its snout, specifically adapted for capturing subterranean termites.

The Indian Gazelle, also known as the Chinkara (Gazella Bennettii), is a relatively diminutive species of gazelle, weighing approximately 23 kg and standing at a height of 65 cm. During the summer, it boasts a reddish-buff coat with smooth, glossy fur. In winter, there is a pronounced contrast with the white fur on its belly and throat. This species is native to India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Pakistan, and potentially Afghanistan. The chinkara thrives in arid environments such as sand deserts, flat plains, hills, dry scrub, and light forests. Adapted to prolonged periods without water, it has evolved to thrive in exceedingly dry regions. Although primarily a solitary creature, it occasionally forms small groups of 2 to 4 individuals. The majority of the global population is concentrated in the Thar Desert of western India.

The Nilgai, scientifically known as Boselaphus tragocamelus and commonly referred to as the "blue cow," is the largest antelope in Asia and is found throughout the northern Indian subcontinent. It is the only member of the Boselaphus genus, first documented by Peter Simon Pallas in 1766. Nilgai individuals typically stand between 1 to 1.5 meters tall at the shoulder. Adult males weigh in the range of 109 to 288 kilograms, while females are lighter, weighing between 100 to 213 kilograms. These antelopes are recognized by their robust build, slender legs, sloping back, deep neck with a white throat patch, a short crest of hair along the neck ending in a tuft, and white facial spots. Hanging below the white patch is a column of coarse hair. Notably, there's significant sexual dimorphism, with females and juveniles displaying an orange to tawny hue, while adult males have a bluish-grey coat. Only the males possess horns, which measure 15 to 24 centimeters in length.

20/10/2023

The Kashmir Stag, or Hangul (Cervus hanglu hanglu), is a distinctive subspecies of Central Asian red deer, found exclusively in the Kashmir region and its surroundings. It thrives in the dense riverine forests of Jammu and Kashmir and northern Himachal Pradesh.

The Dachigam National Park in Kashmir provides essential protection for this species, but outside its borders, the Hangul faces significant threats. In the 1940s, its population ranged from 3,000 to 5,000 individuals. However, habitat destruction, overgrazing by domestic livestock, and poaching have led to a substantial decline.

Once considered a subspecies of red deer (Cervus elaphus), genetic studies have reclassified the Hangul as part of the Asian elk (Cervus canadensis). The IUCN and the American Society of Mammalogists now categorize it under the Central Asian red deer group (Cervus hanglu), with the Kashmir stag as the representative subspecies (Cervus hanglu hanglu).

The Hangul's existence is critically endangered, with a 2023 census reporting only 289 individuals. Conservation efforts are vital to safeguard this unique subspecies from extinction.

The Indian roller, scientifically known as Coracias benghalensis, belongs to the Coraciidae family. This avian species measures approximately 30–34 cm (12–13 inches) in length, boasts a wingspan spanning 65–74 cm (26–29 inches), and tips the scales at 166–176 g (5.9–6.2 oz) in weight. Its facial and throat regions exhibit a pinkish hue, while the head and back are brown. The rump showcases a vibrant blue coloration, complemented by striking light and dark blue patterns on the wings and tail. When in flight, the roller's vivid blue wing markings are particularly prominent. Both males and females exhibit a similar appearance, and there are two recognized subspecies.

The Indian roller is found across a wide geographical range extending from West Asia to the Indian subcontinent. It is frequently spotted perched on trees and wires along roadsides, thriving in open grasslands and scrub forests, and adapting effectively to human-altered landscapes. Its primary dietary preference is insects, with a particular penchant for beetles. This species is renowned for the dazzling aerial displays put on by males during the breeding season. Adult males and females form pair bonds and jointly care for their offspring. The female typically lays 3–5 eggs in a cavity or crevice, lining it with a thin layer of straw or feathers. Notably, the Indian roller serves as the state bird in three Indian states.

21/09/2023

The Malabar giant squirrel, scientifically known as Ratufa indica, is characterized by its resplendent, multi-hued fur and possesses an impressive total length of up to three feet. Notably, half of this remarkable length is ascribed to its abundantly bushy tail. This particular squirrel species, referred to as the Indian giant squirrel or Malabar giant squirrel, is a substantial, tree-dwelling mammal endemic to the forests and woodlands of India. It is noteworthy for its diurnal habits, arboreal lifestyle, and predominantly herbivorous dietary preferences.

This species exhibits exclusive endemism to the Indian subcontinent, with its primary distribution encompassing regions within the Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, and the Satpura Range, extending as far north as Madhya Pradesh, approximately around 22° N latitude. The distribution of the Indian giant squirrel is inherently fragmented due to its limited tolerance for habitat degradation. As a survival strategy, these squirrels typically construct nests in tall trees, with an average height of approximately 11 meters (36 feet), to evade potential predators.

04/09/2023

The Lion-tailed macaques possess a coat of black fur and exhibit a remarkable gray or silver mane encircling their countenance, a characteristic observed in both males and females. The facial region itself lacks hair and is characterized by a black hue, though it appears pinkish in infants younger than one year old. Contrary to popular belief, these macaques derive their name not from their mane but from their elongated, slender, and hairless tail, which culminates in a lion-like tuft of black at its extremity. The tail measures approximately 25 cm (9.8 in) in length. Their eyes exhibit a shade reminiscent of hazelnuts, framed by prominent black eyelids. Similar to other macaques, Lion-tailed macaques possess spacious cheek pouches that facilitate the storage of food.

Additionally, they are quadrupedal creatures with digits capable of opposition. The distinctive facial mane of this primate has bestowed upon it the German moniker "Bartaffe," meaning "beard ape." This particular macaque species falls within the smaller range of macaques, with a head-body length of 42–61 cm (17–24 in) and a weight ranging from 2–10 kg (4.4–22.0 lb). Offspring are born with lighter facial coloration and lack a mane, which subsequently develops around two months after birth.

29/07/2023

Let us support conservation of this iconic species and the jungles that it calls home. Saving these wonderful big cats also provides security to the other flora & fauna found in their habitats. Interestingly, we also celebrated Jim Corbett’s birth anniversary earlier this month on the 25th.

We kindly ask for increased responsibility during our visits to natural areas and use lodges that minimize their environmental impact while promoting an understanding of the local ecosystem and its wildlife inhabitants. Let's avoid engaging in activities that disrupt the serene wilderness and refrain from causing noise pollution. Being acutely aware of our carbon footprint is crucial; therefore, we must carefully consider our travel choices and the effects they have on the environment. It is imperative that we prioritize thoughtful actions to minimize our overall impact.
