The journey of Netukhouse....

"Ne" meaning pilgrimage and "tuk" meaning child, Netukhouse nestled in the heart of Gangtok, is an exemplar of traditional Sikkimmese hospitality. Built in the late fifties, it was the home of Gellong Netuk lama, executive counsellor to the Chogyal, Sir Tashi Namgyal and later his son, Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal and one of Sikkim's affluent and prominent politici

ans. The house continues to remain in the family,serving as a home for generations to come. However during the early nineties an old family friend Mr Sherap Thenduf-la better known as the proprietor of the Windamere hotel in Darjeeling, suggested opening up the family home to visitors who wanted to experience Sikkimmese life style. Intrigued by this idea and keen on sharing the rich history the home had to offer, a year later this unconventional suggestion materialized in to " NETUKHOUSE" rightly named after the founder. NETUKHOUSE began with four rooms in the main block and by the end of the late nineties blossomed into the addition of 6 more rooms in a newly annexed wing of the original home. The house is eight sided which is called, Richen Surgay, the depiction of Saltho palri: celestial being of the three buddhas. It has also been blessed by very eminent Rimpoches, who have also been guests in our abode

Coming to the gastronomy: There are few places in Sikkim where you will find the silver palate cookbook next to a jar of freshly picked bamboo shoot. Chumden Namgyal Wife of Pema Namgyal ,of the Shangderpa clan from West Sikkim has been perfecting Himalayan fusion dishes for over 25 years. From Yak to Stinging Nettle to delicately sculpted momo”s,her whole some dishes are nothing short of exquisite. Sourced from her own organic garden and farms Chumden will rarely make an appearance but her gourmand presence is an integral and unforgettable part of the Netukhouse experience. There is an in-house bar called the "DUETSI"
where one can witness the pictures from the yesteryears. local drinks like "Chaang"/ millet beer served in bamboo container with bamboo straw immerses oneself in to a spiritual journey during their stay at Netukhouse .
'ARA' or moonshine on special request can be arranged aswell.

After almost three and half years of the property being closed, we decided to open up our doors and we received our first batch of guests, a group of IAS( Indian administrative service) officers from the Manipur cadre. We feel honoured to have Mr Suman Singh( joint secretary, MInistry of Home affairs)and his team/ colleague.

An ORHAS brain storming session
ORHAS provides a forum to discuss and act upon common issues concerning its members.
We aim to support the Sikkim Government and Sikkim tourism stakeholders to improve the authentic and personalized tourist experience through consultancy and workshops, building value for all. The ORHAS members care about the long-term brand and sustainability of Sikkim Tourism. The members includes hoteliers who were part of the Tourism movement of the late 1980’s. This post was long over due, nevertheless A very proud moment for the Netuk House family. Khangchendzonga National Park was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in the mixed category of culture and nature in 2016.
Located at the heart of the Himalayan range in northern India (State of Sikkim), the Khangchendzonga National Park includes a unique diversity of plains, valleys, lakes, glaciers and spectacular, snow-capped mountains covered with ancient forests, including the world’s third highest peak, Mount Khangchendzonga. Mythological stories are associated with this mountain and with a great number of natural elements (caves, rivers, lakes, etc.) that are the object of worship by the people of Sikkim. The sacred meanings of these stories and practices have been integrated with their beliefs and constitute the basis for Sikkimese identity.

Every year on the 18th April is celebrated as The WORLD HERITAGE DAY and the Theme for this year incidentally is “SHARED CULTURE, SHARED HERITAGE and SHARED RESPONSIBILITY”. This theme is even more important now an expression for global unity with current worldwide Coronavirus crisis. The idea behind the theme is the recognition and value of all types of heritage sites across varied diverse groups and communities.
Till date, there has been zero cases of the Covid 19 in Sikkim. I firmly believe that our Guardian Deity, Mt Khangchendzonga with its Colossal presence is watching over us.

April 4 1965: Coronation of the last (King) Chogyal of Sikkim
Today is the 55th anniversary of the coronation of Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal, the last Chogyal of Sikkim. His union with Hope Cooke, an American gave Sikkim a world wide attention and it was for the first time on his coronation the gates for the western world was opened to Sikkim.
His notable contribution to the Sikkimese society was the introduction of Sikkim subject certificate which he made sure to
Protect it under the article 371 F of the Indian constitution during the merger.

So yesterday we had Food Vlogger”s Neeru and her team come over to sample out local authentic dishes..they tried an array of dishes from bamboo shoot, pork trotters cooked with local herbs to local buck wheat roll stuffed with herbs collected from the forest. They have a YouTube channel by the name of Eatstory and are doing a special series by the name of “Homemade in India” episode sikkim..the video should be up on YouTube in a couple of weeks time. @ Netukhouse
