Situated in the west district in of Sikkim, You can reach Uttarey from Pelling, Gyalshing or Dentam . On the way you will pass the Sinshore Bridge said to be the second highest bridge in Asia. The height of Uttarey stand at about 6600ft. Uttarey is famous for its tranquility and natural beauty. The place provides beautiful view to the Himalayan Mountains and its yet relatively more travelled by tourist. Uttarey valley is surrounded by the high hills and dense forest.
During winter the mountains around here are covered with snow allowing heavenly views.
The Kagyu Gumpa (Gumpa is a local name for monastery) in Uttarey is highly revered place of worship for the locals and a good place for sightseeing . The monastery is set amidst dense forest . The wall paintings in the monastery might be of interest . the Dentam peak and the river are akso visible from the monastery. The place is about 10 minutes walk from Titanic parkand located on the top of the hill . Build in 1711; this is one of the oldest monasteries of Sikkim. The monastery building has been renovated and it is not 1711 building that you will get to see here .
Tenzing Hillary Memorial Park – The Park was inaugurated in 2015 to add attraction of Uttarey. It is worth a visit for the mesmerizing view of the area. Great view of the Kanchenjunga range can been seen from here on a clear weather. The statue of two great climbers has been installed.
Trout breeding Farm – The trout farm is just about 2 kms from Uttarey village. There are several large ponds in which the rainbow trout fishes can be seen in thousands. The surroundings area is also quite peaceful and serene and you might find it worth spending some time close to the river nearby.
Mainebass Waterfall – This is a beautiful waterfall near Uttarey village that can be visited on a short hike. The waterfall is about 7km from Uttarey market. You need to walk through dense forest route trail to reach the spot. Camping near the waterfall is possible but needs to get permission from the forest department.
Phoktey Dara (12300ft) – Located at the ridge of the famous Singalila range. Phoktey Dara is famous and unique . The Hilltop Himalayan view point to witness the paranomic view of Mt Everest , Mt Dhaulagiri , Mt Makalu , Mt Lotse , Mt Nuptse in the west and Mt Kanchendzonga , Mt Pendam , Mt Kabru, Mt Narsing , Mt Rathong , Mt Siniolchu , Mt Koktang in the east in all equal ranges embracing eachother. Fascinating view of the entire Chola range falls in the eastern part. There stands a beautiful and a holy peak Singalila and down on its lap the aerial view of Barsey Rhododenron sanctuary, green and blossoming a natures paradise including the view of Darjeeling , Phalut , Sandakpu , Thulo Dhap. Phoktey Dara has a very extraordinary view point mainly for the majestic sunrise and sunset. This place is famous because it is situated nearby to Chewbhanjang pass. This place is famous for trekkers and nature lovers.
Chewabhanjang Pass , (Indo- Nepal Border) – Like Donkyela pass , Nathula pass , Chorten pass and Jelepla pass in the Indo-china border , Chewabhanjang pass is also on of the important and popular pass in the Indo – Nepal border corridor . The name Chewabhanjang is taken from the old name Chewewa-Fangzong which means “Peeping valley”. It lies in the Indo-Nepal border and a famous trade route connecting many villages of the remote and extreme western part of Sikkim with the remote part of eastern part of Nepal. Now the motorable raod has been constructed connecting Uttarey via Shopakha till the Chewabhanjang pass ( Indo-Nepal border)
