These vibrant pictures of both men and women engrossed in their performances, is about the different tribal dance forms of Jharkhand.
The dance forms include- Sarpha, Baha and Dasai, which are enthusiastically taken up by the hutments of the Behda Village, only a few kilometers from Amadubi-Panijiya Rural Tourism Centre.

“I have several unsold paitkar paintings. I spent months fearing I would have to give up this indigenous art form to survive this global pandemic,” says award-winning painter, Vijay Chitrakar from Jharkhand.

The 45-year-old is one of the few remaining artisans in Amadubi who can make a scroll painting using natural colours. While his siblings moved on to other jobs due to the low commercial value of paitkar paintings, Vijay kept his promise to his father of protecting the art used in storytelling performances.

The paintings mirror the daily life of society and bring alive scenes from epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana.

No amount of adversities could shake Vijay’s unwavering faith for years. But now circumstances have forced him to rethink his options.

“I purchased inventories right before the lockdown and now I have no tourists visiting here to buy the paintings. My income has come to a standstill and I don’t know for how long I can feed my two children and wife with my savings, which are being drained by the day,” he says.

However, like every grey cloud, there is a silver lining here as well.

Vijay, whose monthly income was around Rs 15,000 before the lockdown, recently found hope in Habba’s ‘Handmade Dil Se’.

Launched by Habba, an initiative by ' Rang De’, this project aims to provide a platform to rural artisans across India to sell their hand-crafted artworks. This one-of-its-kind initiative has curated exciting Diwali hampers comprising local handicrafts, paintings, textiles and more.

[Please note: The orders don’t disclose what product the hamper will have. However, each hamper is designed in a way that supports the community of a particular region.]

“I cannot afford to travel and sell my paintings. This hamper may be a surprise for your loved one but for me, it is my livelihood,” adds Vijay.

All the proceeds of hampers will directly go to the artisans. So, here is your chance to generate livelihood for an artisan like Vijay who works relentlessly to preserve the dying art form despite all the challenges.
