Delhi Traffic Police
Traffic Alert
It has been observed that a large number of motorists are found driving their motor vehicles in wrong carriageway (against the flow of traffic) on the roads of NCT of Delhi.
This is a serious safety hazard not only for the motorist but also for various other road users. This practice not only hampers the smooth flow of traffic but causes traffic congestion on our roads leading to air pollution. This practice of driving against the flow of traffic has also resulted into accidents and few fatalities in which precious human lives have been lost. The driving of motor vehicles in wrong carriageway (against the flow of traffic) is more prevalent near the junctions where one tends to take a short cut.
In pursuance of the order of Hon’ble High Court, Delhi traffic police will adopt a zero tolerance policy of such traffic violations in the identified areas particularly the 14 congested corridors/junctions.
All DCsP/Traffic (Ranges), ACsP/Traffic (Districts) and TIs/Circles shall start strict enforcement action against all the motorists found plying their motor vehicles in the wrong carriageway (against the flow of traffic). The motorists found driving their vehicles in the wrong carriageway (against the flow of traffic) would be booked under section 184 M.V. Act, 1988( penalty Rs 1000) beside challaning under Rule 17 (i & ii) of Rules of Road Regulations, 1989 punishable under Section 177 M.V. Act, 1988 since it is an act of dangerous driving. In extreme cases, even cases under section 279 IPC (Rash & Negligent Act) will be registered against such violators leading to arrest and seizure of vehicles.
All DCsP/T-Ranges, ACsP/Traffic-Districts and TIs/Circles have been directed to brief their staff accordingly and take immediate necessary action for initiating strict enforcement action against the motorists found plying in wrong carriageway (against the flow of traffic).
Since 1st January 2016 more than 10000 motorists have been prosecuted for wrong side driving.
We seek cooperation of all motorists who should follow traffic rules not only for safety of road users but also for reducing congestion and pollution in the city.
