India has been at the crossroads of many trade routes, both sea and land. It has always been a composition of many different kinds of geographical regions and has had a chequered history for over 3000 years. Architecture in India has been a result of these and many other confluences; yet, there are themes and styles that flow through the different rivulets leading into the meandering river of architecture in India.

One of the more hidden parts of Andhra Pradesh's east coast is a quaint town called Machlipatnam. Also known as Bandar, this erstwhile Dutch port is a busy fishing port, giving the town its namesake. Many small oddities are to be found here, especially in the food: You rarely find fish halwa elsewhere!

Ritipanna is a traditional Sri Lankan method of fishing on stilts. Fishermen sit together for hours on end, waiting for catch to pass by and quickly swoop up the fish with rudimentary equipment. Hard labor, but effective. A sight to be witnessed on your next Quo Vadis adventure!

A Spot Billed Pelican comes in for a clean landing on a lake. Despite seeming common, these magnificent birds are endangered for various reasons: They were once used as decoys during fishing, they lost their habitat and nesting grounds to urbanization, and were even poached to an extent. Today, heronries and bird sanctuaries are havens for these birds. Some villages have also adopted them, letting the birds breed in the village premesis during winters!

"Painted Storks are common winter visitors to India's south come winter, flying in all the way from the Himalayas. Their penchant for soaring on thermal currents mean that long flights should be of no worry to them!

"Peafowl are no surprise to those travelling through India. These magnificent birds have been part and parcel of India's culture, being associated with the 9th avatar of Vishnu, Krishna. They are revered in most parts of North and South India (although they are also considered food in other parts!). Their plaintive call that sounds like a kitten in distress echoes throughout the forest early in the morning.

"The Western Tragopan of the Himachal range is another success story in the making for India. While its numbers were threatened thanks to habitat loss and poaching, the state government took upon itself the responsibility to conserve the bird and recently launched a breeding center for the pheasant, the likes of which make this a very special conservation case!

Himalayan Griffons having existed for aeons in the older parts of the world are known as Old World Vultures, and they're even big enough to steal lambs and small mammals from unsuspecting farmers! This only happens rarely however, as being vultures means that they are also scavengers.

"The Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher is one of the Western Ghat's cutest residents. With a stunning plumage made of pink, purple, red, blue and orange there is no way you can miss this little Kingfisher, except for the fact that they are also extremely shy and prefer the recluse of dense mangroves to the open forests.

"River Terns are resident breeders in India, flying down to certain nesting sites like Karnataka's Bhadra Dam to breed come summer. It is exclusively a freshwater bird and stays close to the banks. Thousands of these birds form nests on the dry islets of the Bhadra and leave only when their chicks are flight ready, in a few months time.

"The Amur Falcon is one of India's greatest success stories when it comes to conservation. Originally a migrant, large numbers of these birds were being hunted down in the Northeast. Thanks to local awareness and a ban on the sale and consumption of the meat, the Amur falcon made a miraculous comeback and thrives today.

"This is the most endangered bird of India, the Great Indian Bustard. With fewer than 200 individuals throughout the country (of which most are in Rajasthan around the Thar desert) there is an immediate need for conserving the last few groups of the bustard. Local conservation efforts include a hatchling program as well as early warning signs for the birds on high-tension electric fences, but tourism and awareness may be one of the only other ways we can continue to see healthy numbers of this magnificent bird.
