Every year on July 28, World Hepatitis Day is commemorated to increase awareness of viral hepatitis, which causes inflammation of the liver and can result in serious illness and liver cancer.

A new wave of unexplained acute hepatitis infections in children is currently sweeping the globe. Around 1.5 million new cases of the hepatitis C virus are reported each year, with an estimated 58 million people worldwide carrying the infection.

According to estimates, 3.2 million children and adolescents worldwide have chronic hepatitis C infection.
