Here is a statue of Sievizo Seyie, in the village of Jotsoma underneath which lies an interesting anecdote- which gives us a deeper understanding of the local sentiment during the Indo-Naga war.

Arunachal Pradesh is rich in Buddhist heritage with a substantial number of monasteries spread across the state. These monasteries vary greatly in size, history, and cultural significance.

Each of these places not only serves as a spiritual center but also plays a crucial role in preserving the unique cultural traditions of the region.

If you are visiting a monastery, here are some tips to keep in mind:

👉Avoid visiting during lunch times, when the monasteries will remain closed.

👉Make sure to request a monk to show you around the monastery to better understand the history, art, architecture and the unique stories and legends surrounding the monasteries.

👉Stay warm if visiting during the winters. Carry a light jacket during the spring and summer months as the weather can change any time and temperatures can drop during cloudy days.

👉Many of the monasteries have guesthouses attached within their complex so make sure to ask if you wish to spend a serene and calm night.

👉Buddhist pilgrims walk clockwise around the monastery and monuments and the same must be respected by visitors. Even the spinning of the Buddhist prayer wheels is done clockwise.

👉The lighting of butter lamps is a ritualistic and symbolic practise in Buddhism. One must first wash their hands and wear a mask in order to avoid contaminating the sanctity of the lamp. This meditative offering to Buddha is accompanied by a prayer.

What exactly is luxury for you?

Is it a rare and precious experience? Does it make you feel like royalty? Perhaps it's more than just the bed you sleep on or the high thread count of your bed linen?

Is luxury waking up to clouds drifting into your room? Or having a private natural pool to go to to escape the heat that others can only complain about? Maybe it's dancing in the rain, carefree, being able to bring out the child in you. Perhaps it's the butterflies that flutter around you as you hike through the lush green forests as you make your way to a waterfall you heard from a mile away.

Whichever way you look at it, this chapter has you covered.

From picking some of the best stays across the region, to hand-picking and putting together the best experiences for the season, with the best of the local guides, we’ve really gone the extra mile in putting this together (you’ll see it when you’re here- that’s a promise!).

Talking of when and where, ladies and gentlemen, we are taking you to Meghalaya, “the abode of clouds”, during its peak monsoon months. This is a region that is known for its rain which has shaped the entire geology, topography and a whole way of life, over millions of years- so what better time to visit if not when the rains are at their best?

From hidden waterfalls to natural pools fed by the gushing rain fed rivers, from lush green forest filled with living root bridges to exciting adventures in the river like rafting and canyoning, monsoon in Meghalaya is a season that should definitely be experienced by any nature lover willing to explore the rainiest region in the world.

Continuing the spring celebrations, we wish everyone a joyful Shad Suk Mynsiem!

This cherished festival of the Khasi community in Meghalaya is a vibrant thanksgiving celebration, expressing gratitude for the bountiful harvests of the past year.

It marks the season of spring, celebrating the fertility of the land and sowing new seeds, embodying hopes for future prosperity.

Central to the festival is the dance of peaceful hearts, a graceful display of tradition and symbolism. The choreography, meticulously passed down through generations, embodies the roles and responsibilities within Khasi society.

Maidens adorned in exquisite silks and adorned with precious jewels take centre stage, symbolising the nurturing presence of women as the keepers of hearth and lineage. Surrounding them are turbaned men, embodying the roles of protectors and leaders, wielding the ‘waitlam’ (sword) and ‘symphiah’ (whisk) with reverence and pride.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Meghalaya's rolling hills, Shad Suk Mynsiem serves as a reminder of the enduring bond between humanity and nature.

May this festival bring peace and happiness to all!

Wishing everyone a heartfelt Happy Sangken! 🌟

Celebrated in Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Assam, is a vibrant event marking the Theravada Buddhist New Year, typically held from April 14 to 16.

It coincides with similar New Year celebrations across various Asian cultures, known by different names such as Songkran in Thailand and Laos.🇹🇭🇱🇦

The festival is deeply rooted in the themes of purification and renewal. The festival kicks off with the ceremonial bathing of Buddha statues, carried from their usual places in the temples to temporary shrines built specifically for this event. This act, using clean and often scented water, symbolizes the washing away of the old year’s misfortunes and sins.

One of the most distinctive features of Sangken is the communal water-throwing. Participants, particularly the youth, sprinkle water on each other. While it's a fun activity, it also carries a deeper symbolic meaning of blessing and cleansing one another for the new year.

The festival concludes with the return of the Buddha statues to their original locations, marking the start of the new year.

Additional rituals include offerings to monks, prayers for good fortune, and community feasts, which foster a sense of togetherness and communal harmony.

Wishing you again a Happy Sangken, fam!

There are some days in life you just want to relive again and again, and the day we cycled through a village in the Eastern belt of Arunachal is definitely one of them! 🚵🏻‍♀️

Our journey began with a winding drive through rugged terrain, our anticipation rising with every twist and turn of the road.

Arriving at the edge of the valley, where civilization gracefully bowed to the wilderness, we unloaded our bikes and prepared to immerse ourselves in the adventure ahead.

Mounting our bikes, we set off and surrendered to the wilderness.

The wind whispered secrets of the land, carrying with it the scent of wildflowers and the earthy perfume of the forest.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we knew that this journey would forever remain etched in our hearts!

A locally foraged variety of the Box Myrtle Bayberries is found across the hills of Khasi and Jaintia in Meghalaya and has a special taste that will sweep you off your feet. Commonly known as Sophie fruit, this is one of the most famous wild delicacies in Meghalaya.

📝Side note- Culturally, it marks the arrival of springtime in Meghalaya.

Now, there are two types of Sohphie: the larger, juicy greenish-yellow ones (Myrica esculenta), and the smaller, sweeter, deep red ones (Myrica nagi or sohphie-nam).

Sohphie fruits are typically used to make pickles, jams, and jellies due to their short freshness period of 2-3 days after being plucked. The fruit is also used to make 'um sohphie', a drink that is said to relieve stomach upsets and other digestive issues.

Warm wishes abound for a prosperous Mopin festival to all our friends along the Siang river in Arunachal Pradesh! 🎉

Cherished by the Galo community, this occasion is a beautiful blend of cultural richness, filled with melodious chants, rhythmic dances, and days of festivities.

At the heart of our celebrations lies a profound reverence for Goddess Mopin Ane. We seek her blessings for the collective well-being, encompassing health, wealth, and a fruitful harvest.

Among the many customs observed during this sacred time, one particularly beloved tradition stands out – the ceremonial act of casting and anointing loved ones with rice powder. This symbolic gesture embodies purity, harmony, and boundless affection, strengthening our sense of connection and familial bonds.

So, let's come together with family and friends and spread the joy of Mopin! Here's to a Happy Mopin for all! 🎊

A waterfall with not 1 outlet, or 2, or 10 but 108!

Uncover the mystical allure of the Chumi Gyatse Falls, in the Tsechu region of Western Arunachal Pradesh, at the Indo-China border.

Cascading from an elevation of approximately 11,500 feet, these breathtaking falls boast an unbelievable array of 108 outlets!

Here’s the legendary story - Padmasambhava, also revered as the ‘Second Buddha’, was challenged by a Lama from the Bonpa sect. He then flung his rosary against a rock and the 108 beads resulted in 108 falls. This is just one story of the many that the locals like to keep alive.

We have also discovered private spots and a hot spring nearby!

Zeminthang - a hidden gem nestled in Western Arunachal Pradesh where you can practice the art of doing nothing. 🌿

Zemithang, which translates to "river-swept land," is likely to sweep you off your feet as well. This quaint village sits on the bank of the Nyamjang Chu river, a lifeline originating from the snow-clad Eastern Himalayas in Tibet's Shannan province. As it enters India, the river carves through a steep gorge, its banks adorned with a diverse mix of forests. Near Zemithang, the valley opens up, welcoming the confluence of the Sumta Chu and Taktsang Chu streams.

Home to numerous waterfalls, a walk in any direction presents silver ribbons of water cascading through the landscape. However, due to its remote location, Zemithang remains less trodden. Trails to some waterfalls might be less developed or require a bit more effort to discover.

For those eager to explore, it's crucial not to venture out alone on these hikes. Always have a local guide accompany you—they know the area best.

While you’re already dreaming of being in these untouched lands, DM us and ask us about our bespoke itinerary where we custom craft your trip to Arunachal (with this gem of a place included at your will)!

Snow has a way of rewriting the scenery, doesn't it?

It's like Tawang decides to slip into something a little more...spectacular.

Big shoutout to .and.food for capturing Tawang's snow-draped elegance!

There's something about seeing a place dressed in snow that reminds you - no matter how cold it gets outside, there's always a little warmth to be found.

Winter's charm in Western Arunachal Pradesh is fleeting, so gather your loved ones quickly and create unforgettable memories in the Eastern Himalayas.

Our Story

“You fear what you don’t understand”, and many people, most people don’t understand Northeast India. We want to bridge the gap between people from all over the world and Northeast India. Our focus lies primarily in promoting cultural exchange in the region through tourism. We believe that travel can make a difference in uplifting such disconnected parts through the creation of authentic local experiences. Our trips ensure that as a traveler you get to soak the essence of the place through the inclusion of small details like eating from a local shop, plucking fresh fruits from someone’s garden with their permission and hiking to the trails off the beaten path. It may sound like every other travel company uses the word authentic experiences but we certainly deliver on those experiences through the group leader or as we call them, the ChaloHoppo Guys. The ChaloHoppo Guy is crucial to the tours organised by ChaloHoppo as he has personally been to these parts before and knows his way around with the locals and the place. And here’s the last word, ‘being responsible doesn't have to be boring! Let's have fun, while travelling responsibly.’
