On World Tourism Day 2024, Kaziranga, Assam, got a fresh breath of air—literally! The dedicated team from Aaghun, WTRP Kazirang, the Kaziranga Regional Journalist Association, and the Hotel & Resort Association of Kaziranga rolled up their sleeves and took to the streets. Their mission? To rid Kaziranga of plastic waste and keep its iconic landscapes as pristine as ever.

Starting bright and early at 7:30 AM on Sept 27, the teams covered several key areas: Kohora Chariali to Mihimukh, the RCC Bridge to Mohpara Weaver's Village Road, Bilpar from One Horned Rhino Camp to Domjan Forest Camp, Panbaree Animal Corridor, and finally, Geleki Mikir Gaon. What's even better? Much of the funding for this effort came from WTRP's own activities, showing how community-driven tourism can make a real impact. It’s the kind of teamwork that proves Kaziranga is beautiful, inside and out! Let's all join hands to keep it that way.

Risingbor Kurkalang, a visionary musician from Meghalaya, North-East India's Laitkyrhong village, has been hailed as a cultural icon for his tireless efforts in preserving and promoting traditional Khasi music. Honored with the prestigious Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, Kurkalang's remarkable journey is a testament to his dedication to the rich cultural heritage of the Khasi Hills. Born in 1978, he drew inspiration from his grandfather's love for indigenous music, and his rural upbringing amidst the region's vibrant musical traditions ignited a passion that would drive him to become a master craftsman and virtuoso of traditional Khasi instruments like the duitara and ka bom.

Kurkalang's journey into music began early, and by 2001, he had already gained recognition for crafting and playing traditional Khasi instruments like the duitara and ka bom. Despite limited resources, his dedication led him to become the first in his village to master this craft. His performances caught the attention of many, especially after his first recording with All India Radio in 1990.

A self-taught musician, Kurkalang's skills span beyond playing instruments. He is a passionate advocate for Khasi culture and has performed across India, introducing audiences to the rich heritage of Meghalaya's folk traditions. His efforts have made him a torchbearer of Khasi music, reviving interest among the younger generation.

In recognition of his work, Risingbor Kurkalang has received several accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri and the Martand Singh Memorial Award from INTACH. Through his music, he continues to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, ensuring that the sounds of the Khasi hills resonate far beyond their borders.
