The Moidam in Assam, India is a fascinating site! It’s the latest to be conferred a UNESCO World Heritage Site and holds immense cultural significance. Moidam refers to a group of ancient burial mounds or megalithic structures found in the region, majority at Charaideo near Sivasagar in eastern Assam. These mounds are associated with the Ahom dynasty, which ruled Assam for 600 years (1228 to 1826 CE).
1. Historical Context: The Ahom rulers practiced a unique burial tradition where they constructed these large earthen mounds to honour their deceased kings and nobles. Each mound contains the remains of an individual, along with valuable artefacts.
2. Construction: The mounds are circular or rectangular in shape and vary in size. They were built using earth, bricks and stone, and some of them have stone slabs at the top.
3. Symbolism: Moidam represents the Ahom belief in the afterlife and the continuity of the soul. The structures were not only tombs but also symbols of power, lineage, and social hierarchy.
4. Location: Most Moidams are found in the Sivasagar district of Assam, particularly around the historic town of Sivasagar (formerly known as Rangpur). The area is rich in Ahom heritage, with other notable monuments like the Rang Ghar and Talatal Ghar.
It remains an essential part of Assam’s cultural heritage. Exploring these ancient burial mounds can provide valuable insights into Assam’s history and traditions.

Khinmey Nyingma Monastery. One of the oldest with superb paintings that adorns it's walls, is just a short drive from Tawang. It is said that the present structure was constructed at a later date and the original gompa, built in 1440 AD, is a 2 hours hike from the road head.
