The Patrika Gate in Jaipur is vibrant and colorful because it celebrates the culture, heritage, and vibrancy of Rajasthan. The intricate designs and bright hues showcase the region’s rich history and artistic traditions . If you are in Jaipur you must visit , but go early as it gets crowded . To take this photograph I was there at 6.30am , but worth it !

Ancient Stepwells of India – Rani ki Vav

Rani-ki-Vav was initially built as a memory to a king in 11th century AD. Stepwells are a disincentive form of a water resource and storage in the Indian subcontinent – structures like these have been built since 3rd Millennium BC. These structures evolve over time from a pit in the soil to an elaborate multi-story work of architecture. This stepwell was built in a Maru-Gurjara architectural style that reflects the mastery of the complex technique with detailed proportions. Almost designed like an inverted temple, highlighting the sanctity of water the structure is divided into seven levels of stairs with highly intricate sculptural panels. There are more than 500 principle sculptures and 1000 minor ones that combine secular, religious, mythological imagery along with literary works.

Meghalaya is an unending affair between the tall pines and the clouds. Hence comes the name "Meghalaya" - the abode of clouds. The British fell in love with the place and dubbed it as the "Scotland of the East'. The Garo, Khasi and Jayantia hills dominate the landscape of Meghalaya.

These are the living root bridges in Meghalaya, India. Local Khasi people used to grow the bridges almost like bonsai trees. For decades khasi were forming a bridge which is actually alive and growing further. In person it feels like you are in some fantastic Alien movie, crossing the cradle of roots. This bridge, for instance, started to grow in 1840. For 180 years it became a true masterpiece.

THE DVARAPALA OF HOYSALA ⭐

Once called ‘Dwarasamudra’ the Hoysala capital was sacked twice, by the marauding army of the Islamic Sultan, Ala-ud-din Khilji under the command of his famed General, Malik Kafur in the 14th century CE. 😪

After this the Hoysalas deserted the capital which came to be known as Halebidu, meaning ‘Old Town’. All that survives of the glorious past are a few exquisitely carved temples. This six feet high dvarapalas wearing jewelry on both sides of the doorways is sheer excellence of Hoysala architecture.

Each has four hands (two broken, others damaged), wear jatamakuta, have third eye and fangs, and stand in S-shaped tribhanga pose. They hold Shiva icons such as damaru, cobra, trisula and others. They were defaced at some point.

Attempts were made in the 20th century to trim, restore and re-polish the dvarapala faces, but it created a disproportionate artificial look.
