We spent a peaceful evening at the Jain temple in Medchal, in the outskirts of Hyderabad.

We saw a lady ascetic ascending the steps of a Jain temple in the outskirts of Hyderabad. These ascetics, called "maharaj saheb" in Jainism, often give up all their worldly possessions and family ties.

They do not stay in one place for long, instead traveling to various Jain temples across the country.

A meal at Ishtaa, Hyderabad. They serve several chutneys, including a typical savoury coconut chutney and a lovely sweet non-spicy coconut chutney. We always have several refills of the sweet coconut chutney!

Looks like a fun workshop

It is our endeavour to promote craft as an integral part of our culture. In this process, we intend to create experiential learning for various crafts and are starting the first workshop at our premises!

Qutb Shahi tombs, the cemetery for the royal family and those who served them. There are thirty tombs in all. Of these, seven are for the royal family .Walk through the serene, breezy landscaped gardens and listen to the stories of intrigues, plots and romances behind each colourful personality.

Legend has it that the tombs were furnished with chandeliers and soft canopies on silver poles. And if criminals took refuge in the tombs, they would be pardoned regardless of the seriousness of their crimes.

Varq, thin silver foil, is commonly used on Indian sweets. In the Ayurvedic and Unani systems of medicine, silver is considered anti-microbial.

That's why, eating from silver plated utensils is recommended. Placing silver foil on edible items allows for them to last without contamination.

Glimpses from a textile tour to Koyyalagudem village near Hyderabad

Koyyalagudem has both small cottage weavers (as shown in this video), and also large powerloom sheds. It was a learning experience to see the different dynamics of these operations and understand how the pricing systems work. The demand for sustainable handmade goods is still in a nascent stage, and the market refuses to pay a premium unless it is a luxury or designer handmade product. The lower pricing of powerlooms makes a powerful case for mechanization. One is faced with hard choices, and those choices are made with the wallet.
