Thailand’s Popular Maya Bay Beach Will Be Shut for Four Months Starting June 1

In order to save its coral reefs, Thailand's tourism authorities are shutting down Maya Bay for four months.

Thailand is one of the world’s most loved holiday spots. Its exotic beaches are arguably its biggest draw. However, one of these beaches is being shut for four months for a very good reason. The beach in question is Maya Bay, a popular beach attraction surrounded by breathtaking cliffs that form lovely landscapes. Thailand’s tourism authority has decided to shut the beach down in seven days for a period of four months in order for its coral reefs to recover from the brutal brunt of rising temperatures and thousands of tourists who visit the destination daily.

Dying coral reefs has been an environmental issue many countries are trying to grapple with. Australia’s natural wonder, The Great Barrier Reef, has been in the news for the same reason. Efforts are being made to come up with innovative ideas to save the reefs. As such, it is a good idea to allow Maya Bay to recover from the effects of tourism and weather. To this effect, no boats will be allowed to moor in the Maya Bay from June 1 to September 30.

Maya Bay is located in the Phi Phi Leh sland that are a sought-after destination in the Andaman Sea. Over 5000 tourists visit Maya Bay on a daily basis. It rose to prominence after it featured in the 2000 film ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio. While some tourists may be disappointed that they cannot visit Maya Bay, tour operators and guides believe that it shouldn’t really hurt business as Thailand has a number of other popular destinations worth checking out.
