A surreal landscape surrounded by the sky-piercing peaks of the snow-capped Himalayan, Zanskar and Karakoram ranges, and adorned with crystal waters of the Shyok, Zanskar and Indus rivers, Ladakh is one of the coldest deserts in the world. Perched at a height of over 11,000 ft above sea level, it is a haven of adventure sports. Its rugged terrain and gushing rivers provide ripe opportunities for activities like trekking, river rafting, camping, mountain climbing and biking. As the winter months approach, the Union Territory is enveloped in a blanket of snow, making it a paradisiacal setting for winter sports. The renowned Chadar Trek starts from the village of Chilling, 66 km away, and mostly covers the frozen area of River Zanskar. Throughout the adventure, trekkers are walking on precarious icy formations, staying in caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites and encountering other snowy landscape.
Ladakh boasts three gorgeous high-altitude lakes, Tso Moriri, Tso Kar and Pangong Tso that look like sapphires embedded in the ground. A natural wonder that leaves tourists in awe is the Magnetic Hill. It is said to defy gravity as it tends to pull vehicles upwards. Ladakh is a prominent Buddhist centre and is dotted with several important monasteries. Tourists can set on a monastery trail and admire the ancient cultures of the region come alive in various paintings adorning the walls while indulging in meditation and other therapeutic and spiritual activities.

Amritsar - Sacred City of Sikhism
A bustling city with an indomitable spirit, Amritsar has at its heart one of the holiest of Sikh values, the Golden Temple. Covered in 400 kg of gold and surrounded by a serene sarovar (pond), one is immediately overwhelmed by the humbling sight of the glittering structure, which also houses one of the largest community kitchens (langar) in the country, serving some 20,000 people a day.
Though visitors often make a beeline for the temple, the old-world charm of the city slowly creeps up on them, making people fall in love with a city buzzing with lively, animated hues. Be it the riddled walls of Jallian Wala Bagh or the energy-charged scene of Wagah Border, one has to enter the city to feel the passion of thousands of people who gave their lives for the country. The numerous Indo-British style buildings that dot the cityscape are a testimony to its rich history and its significant contribution to the Indian freedom movement. In addition, the city is known for its gastronomic pilgrimage that takes place in its frenetic and fantastic bazaars that win you over with their diversity and vibrancy. From a variety of dishes such as butter-soaked paranthas, creamy lassi (digestive made from yoghurt), dahi-balla and aloo-tikki (deep-fried seasoned), the food scene is full of flavours and aromas. However, what makes travelling to the city truly unforgettable is the warmth of its people. Amritsar takes its name from the sacred tank called Amrit Sarovar, meaning nectar pond, which surrounds the Golden Temple. Legend has it that the fourth guru of the Sikh faith, Guru Ram Das, founded the city around 1574 AD. It is said that Guru Amardas bought a piece of land, amidst dense forests, to build a tank. But he died before it could be built. Folklore has it that Guru Ram Das invited 52 traders from nearby places to settle down. They built 32 tents, which still exist in Amritsar, and are popularly known as Batisi Hatta. The construction of Amrit Saro

#ChittorgarhFort, #Rajasthan
Situated on a spectacular hill, #Chittorgarh in #Rajasthan is the largest of India's fortifications, stretching as far as the eye can see. Nestled in the #Aravalli range and bordered by the Berach River, #Chittorgarh resonates with tales of #Rajput chivalry and the melodies of the devotional songs of Queen Meera Bai. The historical grandeur of the city is reflected in its majestic monuments, the legacy of the Sisodia Rajputs of Mewar, who made the region their capital. Fortified under the patronage of the #Rajputs, who preferred to die in battle rather than surrender, #Chittorgarh was attacked three times (1303, 1535, and 1567-68), the enemy becoming stronger and more skillful each time. Although victory was not achieved each time, the sacrifices of these brave souls have left a deep imprint on the history of the region. The men fought to the last drop of their blood while the women performed the jahaur (self-immolation by jumping into a sacred fire). The first attack in 1303 was led by Alauddin Khilji, the second in 1535 by Bahadur Shah of Gujarat and finally by Akbar who captured the fort in 1568. After the last of the attacks, Rana Udaisingh escaped to Udaipur to establish a new capital for Mewar. However, under the Mughal emperor Jahangir (Jehangir), Chittor was returned to the Rajputs in 1616.

One of the jewels of #Rajput #heritage in the royal state of #Rajasthan, #Kumbhalgarh is a walled city with the second longest wall in the world, after the Great Wall of China. A #UNESCO World Heritage Site, the #Kumbhalgarh Fort is located in the #KumbhalgarhWildlifeSanctuary, which was the former hunting ground of the #Mewar rulers. The birthplace of the legendary Rajput ruler, Maharana Pratap, Kumbhalgarh was one of the most important fortresses of Mewar. It was established by Rana Kumbha and his successors, who belonged to the Hindu Sisodia clan of Rajputs.
About 102 km north of #Udaipur, #Kumbhalgarh is situated on the high and jagged western ranges of the Aravallis, which made it virtually inaccessible in the 15th century.
There are 84 forts in the area, of which 32 are said to have been built by Rana Kumbha. In ancient times, #Kumbhalgarh separated #Mewar from #Marwar and served as a refuge for Mewar rulers during enemy attacks.
