St. Thomas, a disciple of Jesus and often regarded as the apostle of India, is believed to have disembarked from a boat at the banks of the Pamba River in Niranam. He then proceeded to establish the church a short distance from this location. St. Mary's Orthodox Church is attributed to his founding in 54 AD.
