Kalonunia rice, also popularly known as Nunia rice, is primarily cultivated in the districts of Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar in North Bengal. It is renowned for its exceptional aroma and is widely used in these regions. This rice is considered the 'King of Rice' in these areas. It was once a favorite of the Maharaja Nripenndra Narayan of Cooch Behar. Even today, Kalonunia rice is traditionally offered as bhog (food offering) at the Madan Mohan Temple in Cooch Behar. Although the rice appears white, its husk is blackish, giving it its name. Due to a decline in its popularity and usage, its production has also decreased over time. However, the limited production that still exists is entirely husked using a traditional wooden rice mill (dheki) and is never available as parboiled rice.

Kalonunia Rice: A Healthier and Traditional Choice

Kalonunia rice, a unique variety from Bengal, offers a healthier and more traditional alternative to commonly consumed rice varieties. Before cooking, it has a distinct appearance - white, medium-sized grains, different from the long, slender grains of Basmati rice. While Basmati lovers might find it less appealing, Kalonunia has been a staple in Bengali households for centuries, especially for dishes like pulao, khichuri, and payesh.

*Why choose Kalonunia rice?

* Health Benefits:
°Lower Glycemic Index: This means it releases glucose into the bloodstream more slowly, aiding in better blood sugar control.

°Arsenic-free: Grown in regions free from arsenic contamination, it ensures a healthier and safer option.

• Traditional and Authentic: It has been a part of Bengali culinary heritage for generations.

• *Sustainable: Being pounded rice, it avoids the harmful polishing process common in other rice varieties.
• *Supports Local Farmers:* Buying Kalonunia rice directly supports local farmers and promotes sustainable agriculture.

For those looking for a healthier and more sustainable rice option, Kalonunia rice is worth trying. It's a delicious, nutritious, and culturally significant choice.
