It's been heartwarming to read messages from parents of the participants of Vanavasa summer camp and to see the smiles on the faces in these pictures.

This year, the idea was to create a more nature-education based summer camp through art, games, activities and plenty of time outdoors.

We can humbly call it a success. The greatest rewards will be that a single child was able to fall more in love with our natural world - because we are more likely to protect what we know and love.

We're so happy to have had wonderful facilitators:

brought her expertise and experience in bridging the worlds of art and ecology and created a framework for our participants to engage with nature. She drew us in with games, workshops and activities that she has learned, honed and created over the years.

came with an intimate knowledge of the surroundings in Maala, being a naturalist who has spent many days and nights walking the trails here. It was a joy to learn from him and be inspired on morning, evening and night walks.
throughthelens_ was our keystone species, the one who kept the fires burning, connections strong and the operations smooth - managing the many tiny invisible things that go into making a residential camp in a remote place happen smoothly.

brought her energy and effort in designing this kind of camp, planning the details and introducing the kids to various larger concepts and ideas through games and activities. Most of all, her joy was in sharing her love for this bioregion with others.

was kind enough to allow us the opportunity to explore this, guiding and inspiring us with ideas and support.

Thank you to each one for making this happen!

A heartwarming, thoughtful and detailed review by our recent guests. THANK YOU! for taking the time to share your experience, it means a lot to us! We would be delighted to you again!

"I recently had the pleasure of staying at Mannapaapu Mane, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of western ghats. From the moment I stepped onto the property, I was captivated by the rustic charm and serene ambiance that echoed the essence of a traditional village tottimane.

The homestay's architecture seamlessly blended with the surrounding nature, creating a picturesque setting that felt like a haven away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The property boasted a private stream adorned with a gentle waterfall, offering a soothing melody that accompanied my entire stay. The ample space for walks and lush greenery added to the tranquility, providing a perfect escape into nature.

One of Mannapaapu Mane's standout features is its commitment to art and collection. Every corner of the homestay is adorned with unique pieces, creating an atmosphere that feels both culturally rich and aesthetically pleasing. The attention to detail in the decor reflects the hosts' passion for creating a space that tells a story and adds a distinctive touch to the overall experience.

The culinary journey at Mannapaapu Mane was nothing short of delightful. The food, prepared in the traditional Udupi style, showcased the authenticity of the region. Locally sourced vegetables were the stars of each dish, providing a farm-to-table experience that heightened the freshness and flavor. The homely Udupi-style cooking was a true treat for the taste buds, offering a perfect blend of spices and textures that left me craving for more.

The warm hospitality of the hosts added a personal touch to the entire stay. They were not just caretakers but also storytellers, sharing the history and culture of the region with passion and enthusiasm. Their genuine interest in ensuring a comfortable and memorable experience for guests truly sets Mannapaapu Mane apart."

A cool spot on a warm afternoon. One of the many nooks around the house where one can sit, slow down and take in the green. All while enjoying the sounds of birds and the gentle fluttering of butterfly wings.

A wonderful review by one of our recent guests, Rajani.

She stayed with us for 4 days and truly imbibed the ambience and the experience that our place offers.

These are the very reasons we do what we do. To meet and interact with amazing people, to share ideas, to facilitate a place of comfort, to let people experience the rawness of nature and find their true selves. And of course, our family grows bigger and stronger!

Truly grateful.

Here's how Jarige Mane looks now!
In our previous post, we had shared some photos and stories of how Jarige Mane was acquired and restored.
There has been complete roof relaying with treated wood, replastered mud walls with mud & lime mortar + cow dung top plaster, red oxide flooring throughout, yellow + red oxide plaster on walls to get that peach finish and widened corridors.
The most exciting thing is the small dipping pool in the courtyard!
We're looking forward to utilising this space as a learning center for local ecology and culture.

Stay tuned for further updates!

This is 'Jarige Mane'.

This house was inhabited by a local Chithpaun community family. They wanted to move out of the house and since it was close to our place, we acquired it with the intention of preserving the old architecture.

The house had cob walls, tiled roof, local wood pillars and a beautiful courtyard. Very pretty overall!

Then COVID hit and we couldn't do much about it for 2 years.

Since last year we have been working on restoring it. Some plastering, relaying the roof, replacing weak wood with stronger refurbished wood, red oxide floor and some nice touches here and there.

In our next post we'll share photos how it looks now and little details we have added.

Stay tuned!

It's World Heritage Week!

Mr. Purushotham Adve, an artist based in Udupi, developed his love for heritage architecture during his work at Hastashilpa Heritage Village, Manipal, working closely with Late Mr. Vijayanath Shenoy in founding years of the museum. It was always his dream to restore and stay in a heritage home. Hence Mannapaapu Mane was started in 2015, with a vision to preserve our beautiful architecture and the culture around it.
Over the years we have restored a few houses around Mannapaapu Mane in the village of Mala, Karkala.
Over the next few days, we will be sharing some photos and stories of our work in conserving our heritage architecture and traditional practices!
Stay tuned!
