Onam Celebrations at Vallachira
Onam Celebrations at Vallachira — A Blue Yonder Original
Since 1962, Vallachira, a village in Kerala’s Thrissur district, has celebrated Onam like no other. In response to the Kerala government's call to promote the festival across the state, Vallachira’s Panchayat ensured that these celebrations continued year after year without interruption, except for the pandemic in 2020. Even during the challenging Emergency years (1975–77), the village sought special permissions to uphold their traditions.
What makes Vallachira’s Onam special is not only its historical continuity but also its deep-rooted connection to local folk art and theatre. With a population of 25,000, the village thrives during Onam as 1,500 people actively participate in the festival, while an additional 5,000 contribute unofficially. This collective effort brings ancient cultural practices to life, from Iverkali, a dance linked to the Pandavas, to villu paatu, a unique form of musical storytelling using the archaic villu or one-string bow.
The festival showcases the village’s commitment to preserving Kerala’s diverse heritage. As you witness performances that honour snake worship (pulluvan paatu) or celebrate female energy (nanthuni paatu), you become part of a story that transcends generations.
At The Blue Yonder, we believe in creating better places for people to live and visit. Our responsible travel experiences are crafted to foster meaningful connections with local communities, revealing the authentic essence of the destinations we explore. The Vallachira Onam is a shining example of how tradition, culture, and responsible tourism can blend seamlessly, offering both visitors and locals a celebration that transcends time.
Happy Onam from all of us at The Blue Yonder.

musical trail by the blue yonder
For all the musicians who have enriched our life. Celebrating World Music Day by sharing this clip from our Musical Trail. An initiative that was started to make the music space inclusive (caste, gender, class) and create livelihood opportunities with dignity, has touched thousands of travellers as well as locals in several different ways in the past twenty years.
Did you know that we have interactive musical trails ranging from half a day to a couple of weeks that would take you through Kerala?
Sopanam School of Panchavadyam is a key partner to our musical trail. A one-room school that has transformed into a movement under the leadership of Santhosh is now training more than 800 students in traditional percussions. Check our bio to register for The River Stura where one day is dedicated to exploring the different schools of music that evolved on the banks of #RiverNila

Pandemic isn't over, life is no longer the way it used to be. But many have learnt to live with Covid19 situation. We are survivors. Individually and collectively, we looked at the continuous lock down, virtual meetings, lack of interactions etc in different ways.
Artists struggled not only with lack of income, but also lack of stages and productions they were used to. At the same time many figured out various ways to survive the lockdown, as creative as they could.
This is a trailer of one such. These are the pandemic babies. Lock Down Productions. Shardaya explores gender fluidity. Shot in an unconventional 'work in progress' structure, the aesthetics will blow your mind.
As they say "Sahrdaya is an experimental movement art film that took shape during the Pandemic. This was a result of creative minds coming together to create, question and realise something out of the ordinary."
