Kochi is remarkable for its bird diversity, with flooded paddy fields and shores hosting a magnificent array of bird species. There are multiple birding locations around the town where one can walk around and spot these beauties. The density of birds in muddy fields and shores is significant, making it an ideal spot for up-close observation. Therefore, it's important to mention that the area is also highly suitable for bird photography.

Top Birding Hotspots in Kerala

The mountain range that expands through the state has multiple birds that are confined to this bird life-rich hotspot. Birding in Kerala with Tropic Trails seek to see over 25 species of birds endemic to the region. Some of the remarkable include Thattekkad, Munnar, Periyar and Chinnar.

:- With a picturesque landscape and cool climate, Munnar is another hotspot with a fascinating bird population, the habitat varies from High Altitude Montane Forests (Shola) to Grassland and tea plantations. Some of the remarkable birds here include Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Black and Orange Flycatcher, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Nilgiri Pipit, Nilgiri Thrush, White-bellied Blue Robin and Painted Bush Quail.

:- The avifauna of the sanctuary includes residents and migratory birds. The lush tropical rainforest bears many endangered and endemic species, the wetland formed along the River Periyar and the foothills covered with rainforest and teak trees forms unique habitats and hosts species restricted to such ecotones. The area has the most endemic birds of the Western Ghats, Malabar Parakeet, White-bellied Treepie, Crimson-backed Sunbird, Malabar Grey Hornbill, White-bellied Blue Flycatcher, etc. A good number of owls and nightjars can be found here as well both during the day and at night such as Mottled Wood

:- Periyar Tiger reserve covers an area of 777 sq km and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. The lush green forest gets its name from River Periyar which originates deep inside the reserve. In the moist deciduous and evergreen forests, Wynaad Laughingthrush is one species that every birder seeks, other birds to look out for include Great Indian Hornbill, Malabar Trogon, White-bellied Woodpecker, Rufus Babbler, Grey-fronted Green Pigeon, and Common Flameback. There’s also a fair amount of chance of seeing, Black Baza, Woolly-necked Stork, White-rumped Shama, and Jungle Owlet. The trails in the reserve offer a good chance of seeing a few mammals as well, Indian Elephant, Sambar Deer, Indian Gaur, and Nilgiri Langur are a few to name.

:- Chinnar unfolds a spectacular avian tapestry featuring White-rumped Shama, Brown-headed Barbet, Indian Pitta, Yellow- billed Babbler, and the vibrant Plum-headed Parakeet. The sanctuary's unique blend of flora, including the thorny scrub forests and extensive grasslands, attracts species like the Yellow-legged Button Quail and Sirkeer Malkoha .

As you traverse Chinnar's trails, keep an eye out for raptors soaring above – the Crested Serpent Eagle and Changeable Hawk-Eagle are frequent sightings. With its tranquil environment and diverse birdlife, Chinnar promises a rewarding adventure for birding enthusiasts seeking an immersive experience in the heart of Kerala's natural wonders.
