A dreamland that turned into a ghost town overnight; History of Dhanushkodi.
Located at the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent, Dhanushkodi is a remote and mysterious land steeped in history and legend. Known as the ghost town of Dhanushkodi, this abandoned village is unique as the site of India's last road, a haunting reminder of a tragic past and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
This small port was an important link in the shipping between India and Sri Lanka during the British rule. Today the place is famous for its fishing industry. Dhanushkodi was also a sacred pilgrimage center for Hindus due to its association with the legendary Rameswaram. Dhanushkodi, which was not much above the sea level, was like a huge sand dune during the cyclone that struck from 22nd to 25th December 1964.
Dhanushkodi has great historical significance and its roots date back to ancient times. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed to be the place where Lord Rama built the bridge to Lanka or known as Ramasethu to save his wife Sita from the clutches of the demon king Ravana.
Dhanushkodi beach is one of the most attractive sights here today. A very popular tourism hotspot, Dhanushkodi Beach is visited by lakhs of tourists from all over the world every year. This beach is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar on one side and the Bay of Bengal on the other.

Rameswaram is one of the Char Dhams (holy pilgrimage sites) and the Ramanathanswamy Temple is considered to be very sacred.
