|| Changable Hawk Eagle - Sundarban National Park ||

The world’s largest mangrove forest is a serene landscape that syncs its moods with the changing tide twice every day.

The tiger may be its biggest attraction, but Sundarban is also home to 428 species of birds, a recent publication of the Zoological Survey of India. Changeable Hawk eagle one of the key attraction in the Sundarban.

The changeable hawk-eagle or crested hawk-eagle (Nisaetus cirrhatus) is a large bird of prey species of the family Accipitridae. It is a member of the subfamily Aquilinae, with signature feathers, absent in tropical raptors from outside this subfamily, covering the tarsus.

It is a typical “hawk-eagle” in that it is an agile forest-dwelling predator and like many such eagles readily varies its prey selection between birds, mammals or reptiles as well as other vertebrates.

In India, the saltwater crocodile is found in saline and brackish mangrove swamp forest of Bhitarkanika and Sunderbans. The best time to spot the Sundarban crocodile is in winter when crocodiles often bask on the river banks during daytime.

Crocodiles can turn killers like the tigers. Killer crocodiles actually wait and watch its prey for a long time until it reaches within the ambit of its attacking range and then attacks with lightning speed.

SUNDARBANS – The largest mangrove forest in the world, this place is not only a composition of mangrove and tidal mudflats, twisting rivers and creeks, but is also a mystifying panorama of millions of trees creating a dense, green canopy. It is an estuarine phase of the Ganges as well as the Brahmaputra river system forming the largest delta in the world.

The tidal helophytic mangrove forest of Sundarbans experiences tides twice a day. The changing level of water regulates the biological diversity and lifeline for the whole eco-system. To see a tiger cross a large creek or river is extraordinary and finding pugmarks on mudflats is always exciting, Sundarbans is still a mysterious haven for nature lovers. The Sundarban tigers are one of the best swimmer, maximum sighting is happen when tiger cross the narrow creeks & river for finding their foods or change their territory.

It is also believed that Sundarbans is the most difficult area with the danger of supposedly most aggressive tigers in the world.

What will happen if tigers disappear from their habitat, who will be affected if such a situation arises? It is a well-known fact that Sundarbans is a ‘hidden treasure’ and the dense swamp provides protection to tigers. In this ecosystem the tiger is a legendary symbol.

Landscapes where tigers live overlap with globally important ecosystems, many of which are in Asia’s last wilderness. These areas rich in wildlife and plant life harbor a wealth of critically important goods and services that millions of people rely on every day. Healthy tiger habitats help mitigate climate change, provide fresh water to animals and people, reduce the impact of natural disasters, and improve the health of local people.

We have already destroyed many jungles on this planet, and remaining patches like Sundarbans are struggling to survive.

Sundarbans is famous for tigers but its water channels and mangrove forests are also the habitat for otters.

Smooth-coated otter is characterized by a very smooth, sleek pelage. Their eyes and ears are small, the tail is flattened, limbs are short, strong, and the fore and hind paws are large and well-webbed. These otters have generally been described as fish specialist. They are strong swimmers and hunt in groups. Most foraging activity occurs in water and small fish are swallowed whole, but large fish are taken to shore.

Males are polygamous, mating with up to four females. The females often dig their own breeding dens and maintain small family groups of a mated pair with up to four offspring.

Thanks Ashok da for spotting & thanks joy for positioned boat properly.
