KALAPA(HIMACHAL PRADESH): The Kinner-Kailash range is silhouetted against the lovely town of Kalpa in Himachal Pradesh, the ancient capital of the Kinners of Kinnaur. Kalpa was the headquarters of the Kinnaur region till the town of Rekong Peo donned the mantle.

In ancient Hindu mythology, the Kinners were birdlike men akin to Gods - midway between man and God. Kinnaur is a land like no other, a realm as strikingly varied as the landscape you will encounter on the way.

Much of the excitement of visiting Kalpa lies in the adventurous journey to get here. The scenery changes dramatically from gorgeous valleys, green orchards, and forests of cedar, chilgoza-pine, and bhojpatra trees, to the starkness of the mountains, high altitude deserts, and stunning gorges.

The rugged mountains rise up dramatically from the riverbanks. The Sutlej carves a deep chasm through the Great Himalayas as it rages through Kinnaur, to meet the quiet Baspa at Karcham. This is one of the most breathtakingly vertiginous drives you will face. The road is literally carved through the rock face with a sheer drop down to the turbulent Sutlej.

Once you reach the town of Kalpa, you are rewarded by the most fantastic views of the Kinner-Kailash, of the 70 m shivling that juts out of the peak and the striking sunrises and sunsets that light up the mountains.

WEST SIKKIM: West Sikkim offers great birding opportunities. Barsey, located at 3300 m, on a massive ridge covered with protected forests of Silver Fir, hemlocks, magnolia, and Rhododendrons is one of the best birding areas in Sikkim.
Around Pemayangste and the nearby village of Pelling there are several excellent birding sites and hikes. Some important species like the Maroon-Backed Accentor, Red-faced Liocichla etc are found around these forests.

The Khecheopheri Lake hosts migrant ducks and occasionally some rare species such as Black-necked Crane, Black-tailed Crane and many others.

For those who are enthusiastic about trekking in the high Himalayas, the best way to see higher altitude birds is to take the 10 day Dzongri Trek. Some of the birds seen on this trip are Blood Pheasant, Himalayan Monal Pheasant, Brown Parotbill, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Cutia, Sapphire flycatcher, White browned Bush Robin, Grandala, Rufous - breasted Accentors, White winged and collared Grosbeaks, Spot-winged Rosefinch, etc.

BIRD WATCHING: Sikkim is rich in avifauna and is considered to be a birdwatchers paradise. Its avian population extends to almost 550 species. The climate varies between the tropical heat of the valleys and the alpine cold of the snowy regions. The altitudinal zones of vegetation range from tropical, sub tropical, temperate to Alpine. In some places only 10 Kms in a direct line separate the warm valleys from perpetual snow. The telescoping of terrain has created marked altitudinal zonation in the humidity, rainfall, climate and vegetation. This factor is responsible for the great variety and abundance of the resident bird life, making this area arguably one of the richest areas of its size anywhere in the world.

Chota Mangwa (Darjeeling)

Chota Mangwa (Darjeeling): Chota Mangwa is one and half hours drive from Darjeeling and can be reached via Teesta bazar from Siliguri. It took us about 40 minutes to cross Ghoom. From Jorebangla you need to take a left turn and drive up to 6th mile and then proceed down towards Takda.
Takda is a small little town with a few churches. It is here you can stop for a cup of tea and then again proceed towards Tinchuley. The entire vegetation and forests in the area comes under the Senchal range. You get to see the tall coniferous Cryptomaria (locally called Dhuppi) through out the drive.
Chhota Mangwa is a relatively new destination located on a ridge at the top of the Mangwa hill in the Darjeeling district. It's a quiet village with some excellent views of the meandering river Teesta and magnificent Kanchenjungha on a clear sunny day.
Chota Mangwa is an Eco friendly village with extremely friendly and down to earth people to welcome you. The village can be reached by dirt road from the main motor road that takes you to Teesta Bazar. A Bolero is good enough to take you there. While we missed out on the clear skies, we enjoyed the serene, tranquil atmosphere with occasional rains and mist. Needless to mention the true warmth and hospitality of the local people living in and around the area.

Chilapata(DOOARS): Chilapata Forest is a dense natural forest near Jaldapara in Dooars. It is about 20 km from Alipurduar town and is within the Jalpaiguri District. A drive through the forests is an interesting experience. Sighting of elephants are almost regular.
The chief attraction at Chilapata is the "Nalraja Garh" or the fort of the Nal kings. The fort was built during the Gupta period in the fifth century, although the fort itself is in ruins now, it has tremendous archeological importance and reminds one of the golden age in the history of India. The site is not maintained very well and wildlife sighting at this place is not unusual.
The area was infamous for dacoity and local villagers were blamed for the menace for long. During the past couple of years efforts of the forest department and police has brought fruit as the cases of decoity has stopped and tourists can pass through the forest safely.

LEOPARD(DOOARS):At times you get lucky, sometimes patience pays off. For a change luck was on my side. Although Leopards can be found in abundance in the forests of Dooars (as well as the odd stray ones in the numerous tea gardens that make up Dooars) it isn't easy to spot one in such a relaxed mood. This is the Chilapata Reserve Forest, one of the lesser known forests in the Dooars. The maginficent beast posed with absolute boredom maybe not even for a minute and soon ran off as only leopards can.

Rongo beautiful places of Dooars :
Rongo Perched on the top of a hill at an altitude of 4500 ft near the Bhutan boarder, Rongo or Rongu serve as the Headquarter of Cinchona Plantation under Kalimpong subdivision. A tiny remote village having a market, post office and few houses in its locality, Rongo used to be a significant place for plantation and growing medicinal plants. Rongo offers fine-looking views of adjoining hills, dense forests and river valley of Jaldhaka.

How to reach Rongo:
Rongo can be arrived from Siliguri through the Dooars crossing Chalsa, Khunia More Gairibas and Bindu. From Gairibas an uneven motorable road turns towards left to Rongo, about7kmsaway.

It is the doorway to the Neora Valley National Park. Positioned on a hilltop the place offers a bird’s eye view of a vast plains of Dooars spotted with tea gardens and forests.
Most awesome trek in the Neora Valley Park begins from Mouchuki to Rechela - uppermost point of the Park. The most daring trek in North Bengal takes at least three days to Rechela through Bhotegarh and Thusum covering the dense forest and another three days to Lava through Aluabari.
