100 years of George Mallory join The Himalayan on 8th June 2024 at the Institute of Engineers Kolkata to delve into the mystery of the last climb?

It’s almost a century since the 1924 expedition ended in tragedy, yet the question of whether the climbers conquered the summit remains unanswered

Most people believe Ladakh to be a cold desert with a harsh barren landscape devoid of grass, flowers and shrubs and mainly rocks. This is generally true but for a few weeks during summer this landscape comes alive as we saw on our walk to Kangyatse base camp at an altitude of around 4800 metres in August on the Markha trek - you can see both Kangyatse 1 and 2 in the background - the rains in July may be responsible for the flowers and greenery

SEVENTY YEARS OF THE FIRST ASCENT OF EVEREST
From early morning today I have been thinking about Hillary and Tenzing in their small tent at Camp Nine starting out for the summit of Everest on May 29th 1953. It was a different world for them compared to mountaineering today. No satellite phones, wireless or internet connection broadcasting their climb on the internet or TV, no fixed ropes, no lines of 100-200 climbers in a traffic jam on the way to the summit, no sherpas to haul clients up to the top and no 60,000 USD fees to stand on the highest point on earth!

But on 29thMay 1953 there was just two men and the highest mountain on earth.

Hillary's boots were frozen and he had a time trying to unfreeze them. Particularly moving is Tenzing commenting in "Man of Everest " by Ullman and Tenzing about Thyangboche monastery visible far below in the valley in that early morning light. “God of my father and mother,” Tenzing prayed in his heart “be good to me now-today”.

On reaching the summit Tenzing says “ I could see all the familiar landmarks from the earlier expeditions – the Rongbuk Monastery, the town of Shekar Dzong, the Kharta valley, the Rongbuk and East Rongbuk glaciers, the North Col, the place near the north east ridge where we had made Camp Six in 1938. Before starting down we looked around once more. Had Mallory and Irvine reached the top before they died? We looked but we could see nothing. Still they were in my thoughts and I am sure, in Hillary’s, too.”

One can well imagine the anxiety of Hunt, Evans, Lowe, Bourdillon and all the other climbers down the mountain waiting for the result on that fateful day. They knew it was the last chance for the British- the Swiss had almost beaten them the previous year. No phone call from the summit to tell them of the success. Hillary's meeting with George Lowe above the South Col is poignant with drama on their return from the summit.
Mountaineering the way it should be: shorn of hype, drama and trophy gathering!

Treks & Photo Workshops in the Himalaya

South Col Expeditions is a boutique outfit carrying out treks and photo workshops in the Himalayan region especially Nepal. Most major treks are led by Sujoy Das, the founder of South Col Expeditions. Other treks are led by trusted guides(sirdars) with a wealth of experience. South Col groups are usually small between six to eight persons and their client profile includes photographers, wildlife and nature lovers and environmentalists. Many of South Col’s clients are trekking for the first time and so require hand-holding and support which we provide and help them fulfill their dreams!

WHY SOUTH COL?

  • We are keenly aware of the fragility of environment and cultures in which we trek and recognize our responsibility in maintaining them. "Take pictures, leave only foot prints" is our motto.

  • Trekkers get personalized attention both in the planning stage as well as during the trek itself.
