Here is a Collared Laughingthrush from Dalat Plateau, Vietnam
Collared Laughingthrushes are endemic to a small area in Dalat Plateau - one of the several Vietnamese endemics. They are categorized as endangered, due to their very small range (max 720 sq km only).
This was taken from a hide next to a fast flowing, shallow mountain stream, which is what creates the beautiful background.

One seat is still left in my Vietnam trip from 13 March - 20 March. Get in touch for more details.

There are three subspecies of Blue Pitta. Here are the males of all three photographed in Vietnam and Thailand

The nominate is present in India, Myanmar, SW Thailand, North Laos and North Vietnam.
Ssp. aurantiacus is present in SE Thailand and SW Cambodia. The orange on the head and nape is muted and has more yellow tinge in this.
Ssp. willoughbyi is present in Central Laos and Central Vietnam. This is the brightest and has bright orange on breast.

This last subspecies will be one of the highlights in Vietnam this March. Some seats of that still left. Contact for more details.

Two of three top targets from any Thailand trip - this one concluded day before yesterday. Hume's pheasant and Blue Pitta (the third mega being Spoon-billed Sandpiper, which gave prolonged views but wasn't carrying camera that day). But my personal highlight was seeing 104 Nordman's Greenshanks in a single flock at Pak Thale - somewhere between 10-15% of the world population.
Thailand in February - March is always fun.
Next trip in February 2024.Let me know if interested.

Received this nice gift from Arpit Bansal - a desk calendar like he does every year, but this year it traced his journey to 1000 species in India. Glad that his 999th and 1000th species were made during our Western Arunachal trip in April - Grandala and Snow Partridge on a very cold and wet day at Sela Pass

Came back yesterday from a North Sikkim birding trip.
We birded on the Tibetan Plateau around Gurudongmar, and forest patches and river habitats around Yumthang, Lachen and Gangtok

Highlights :
-- White-rumped & Rufous-necked Snowfinches
--Six Laughingthrushes including Grey-sided and Scaly.
--Several interesting raptors including Saker Falcon (at Gurudongmar), Upland Buzzard and Shaheen Falcon in Gangtok (very unexpected in these parts)
--Grandala . A flock of about 500/600 have arrived in the outskirts of Lachen from higher altitude. Their numbers will soar over the winter.
--Ground Tit
--Ibisbill
--Little Owl
--White-throated Dipper (both morphs)
--Speckled Wood Pigeon
--Red Crossbill
--Great Rosefinch
--Guldenstadt's redstart
and other regular birds of the region.

Mammals include Tibetan Fox, Argali, Blue Sheep, Tibetan gazelle and a family of eight Himalayan Tahrs (at the eastern edge of its distribution). One highlight was two male Argalis locked in combat on the Tibetan plateau near Gurudongmar. They'll run back, size each other up, run forward at full speed, get up on hind legs and ram their horns with thunderous force. Went on and on doing this while we watched through scope.

Weather was clear but very cold. Road to Gurudongmar was closed right after our visit due to snow, but the next day was clear and it has opened up by now, and hopefully will remain open for some more time.

Came back yesterday from a North Sikkim and north bengal birdwatching trip.

Primarily focus was on the birds of Tibetan Plateau around Gurudongmar, but we also birded in forest patches around Lachen and Gangtok and at Tiger Hill near Darjeeling

Highlights :
--Four species of Snowfinch : White-rumped, Rufous-necked, Blandford's and Black-winged.
--Eight Laughingthrushes including Blue-winged, Spotted, Grey-sided and Scaly.
--Several interesting raptors including Saker Falcon (at Gurudongmar), Upland Buzzard and Northern Goshawk
--A very unexpected Short-eared owl at Tiger Hill (~2500 masl)
--Hill Partridge at a feeder.
--Ground Tit
--Little Owl
--Speckled Wood Pigeon
--Red Crossbill
--Wallcreeper
--Collared Treepie
--White-winged Grosbeak
--Guldenstadt's redstart
--A huge nesting colony (1000+) of Nepal House Martins below Lachen

This was a week after the major rains in north bengal and sikkim which caused landslides all over and hindered road transportation. Fortunately most of it is back in order by now (during the intial part of the trip we did face some delays due to road blockages).

Another outcome of bad weather was that the area above 14K ft was completely snow covered. The road to Gurudongmar had barely opened a couple of days before we went. Snow covered Tibetan Plateau presented a spectacular landscape, and we had great fun photographing birds on snow.

Next trip is on 17th November 2021 (contact for more details if you are interested)
