This post comes at the backdrop of 10 Leopards sighted on a single trip in this concluding season, a record in itself.

The Leopard is one of our animals on our East Quest Logo, and the only predator on the logo. Leopards are geographically the most widespread of all big cats, distributed across much of Africa and Asia.

Habitat destruction and rising number of human settlements have continued to push animals on the brink including leopards. Yet, considering that they're very very adaptable by nature, leopards have somehow managed to hold on to interesting habitats such as sub-urban jungles outside cities and towns, sugarcane fields and secondary forest near rural areas. The result of this, is that it has often brought Leopards directly into conflict with humans, where more often than not, it is sadly the big cat that is on the receiving end.

A fairly recent 8 month field study during the time of covid pandemic by our Founding Director & Naturalist Avijit Dutta in the hills of Kumaon, Uttarakhand in the Western Himalayas showed that there were at least 04 leopards surviving within a space of a little more than 06 square kilometers with almost little to no conflict with humans. The simple reason involved 02 critical aspects.
Firstly, most of the remaining 06 sq KMs forests and around were largely undisturbed with least human interference, and secondly, the prey species present there were hardly pursued as game by humans and remained decent both in terms of numbers as well in terms of the diversity of prey species.

However, as we write this post, things are constantly changing and changing rapidly as human numbers continue to grow and as wild habitats continue to shrink, the challenge for leopard conservation and conservation of all flora and fauna face an uphill task and remains a constant battle.

Celebrating International Women's Day with a heart full of gratitude for the incredible women who grace our lives with their presence. Our young, adventurous team has been exploring the enchanting landscapes of Agra and Rajasthan, immersing themselves in the beauty of nature and honing their skills in wildlife photography.

Today, we want to extend our deepest appreciation to all the remarkable women who bring warmth and fulfillment to our society, workplaces, and families. We're especially grateful for the women who have inspired our founding director along the way.

Kate Eshelby , with her awe-inspiring journeys to the far corners of the earth, captivates us with her tales of exploration. Radhika Iyer's .iyer.16 natural storytelling flair at NDTV has left an indelible mark on our hearts. And Suzi Eszterhas's "girls who click" initiative serves as a beacon of hope, empowering young women to unleash their creativity in nature photography.

In our midst, we're privileged to have Titli, our first sponsored intern, whose journey with us symbolizes hope and opportunity. And Natasha, our vibrant social media manager, embodies the ripple effect of inspiration, sparked by a talk she attended years ago by our founding director.

To all the women who inspire, empower, and uplift us, today and every day, we salute you. Happy International Women's Day! ๐ŸŒธ

The Hornbill's presence on our East Quest logo is no coincidence.
Renowned for their grace, loyalty, and splendor, these birds hold significant cultural significance among various tribal communities across India's North East and beyond.
They are often central figures in mythological narratives and jungle lore.
Here, you'll find a collection of captivating images capturing a remarkable 30-minute encounter with a pair of Great Hornbills during one of our recent expeditions in the North East of India.

EAST QUEST MEETS SANDESH KADUR๐Ÿ“ธ

On one of our early morning safaris to Kaziranga on the recently concluded tour, our jeeps crossed paths with
Mr. Sandesh Kadur and his team and well, let's just say it was an absolute delight.

Although our meeting was brief, its a pleasure sharing a common passion for wildlife.

Yesterday, amidst the lush landscapes of Western wing of the Kaziranga National Park, a captivating pair of Rose-ringed Parakeets stole the spotlight as they lovingly tended to their newborn offspring likely hidden within the hollow confines of the tree trunk. Adding to the drama was a third parakeet, observed in the top right corner (slide 1), stirring some speculation among usโ€”was it a jealous suitor or simply a curious bystander? To all the singles out there, take heart, because your turn will come soon!

ENCOUNTERS WITH THE KING COBRA;

We are so happy to share with all of you about our two great sightings of the King Cobra in back to back months for December'2023 and January'2024.

The first image on this post is of a juvenile specimen from last month when our team at East Quest went exploring at Mizoram's Dampa Tiger Reserve, a deep remote tropical jungle in India's far North East while the other image is from Kaziranga national park in Assam also from the Northeast of India, which was sighted while on a morning game drive with our guests from Australia in December of 2023.

The geographical distribution of the King Cobra ranges all the way from evergreen forests of India all the way down to other South Asian countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines., although their sightings are extremely rare. They continue to remain vulnerable mainly due to habitat loss. This reptile specie, although venemous, are shy and usually avoid encounter with humans, hence human deaths from King Cobras are few and far between. Many also believe them to be more intelligent, evolved and sensitive compared to other reptiles.
