The magnum opus, Dev Deepavali, in Varanasi is approaching.

Have you checked out the beautiful Rewa Kothi built by the king of Rewa (in Bihar) at Rewa Ghat on the riverfront in Varanasi? Today the building serves as a hostel for music students of Banaras Hindu University. Often you get to hear the strains of tabla and sitar escape the windows of this majestic building.

Many of the students who live in Rewa Kothi offer private lessons to music enthusiasts, including international tourists. Subha-e-Banaras at Assi Ghat often hosts classical music programmes, where sometimes the students of BHU from Rewa Kothi perform.

Nov 13 to 18.
Join us at Varanasi for the Dev Deepavali trip. We will help you explore this old city alongwith Sarnath and Ramnagar.

Utpal Dutta plays the character "Maganlal Meghraj" under Satyajit Ray's direction in Joy Baba Felunath. The character of a thug or 'gunda' so well scripted by Satyajit Ray takes into account the life of the crime lords who once held sway in Banaras.

Here are some historical facts documented by some historians about the thugs or gundas of Banaras.

The gundas of Banaras were a class by themselves. There were two types of gundas. The khandani (inherited profession) and the hired (casual). They stayed in their mohalla amidst the people and not in hideouts like the dacoits.

The khandani gunda was well established in his locality for a generation or more, had a distinct identity and image to keep up at all costs. He had his own sphere of influence and activity, his own force of hired gundas and a cache of weapons. He could extort money, demand favours, command respect and inflict pain at the slightest protest or refusal to obey. He could help the poor and the forlorn, settle minor disputes, spare those who begged for mercy, protect the honour and dignity of the women and the high born of the locality. He was ever ready to sell his strength to the noble, to the wealthy, the needy and the Teertha Purohits to settle their cases concerning property, money or other disputes. He was always fully armed, ready to strike at anyone at any time for any cause. But killing stealthily, taking life without reason and lifting a hand of oppression on a hurt or fallen down person were highly unethical acts and against his Dharma.

Busy in his profession and simple in life, he spent his leisure often in gambling and drinking. The colourful qualities of the gunda impressed the common Banarasi, who looked upon him with respect as one enjoying status and as one who extended his protective cover to those who surrendered to him.

Our Maghanlal Meghraj as per the screenplay, stayed in Nepali Khapra. But actually the mohallas like Hadha, Piyari and Jatanbar of Banaras were famous as the den of gundas. Hadha and Dalmandi were particularly known as the main centres of the Muslim gundas. And Chowbe, Avasti and Yadav had their own centres of supremacy.

Nearly ten thousand people were killed every year by the gundas at the end of the Mughal rule and the beginning of the British rule. 1562 gundas were captured and 382 of them were given the death penalty in a campaign against the thug or gunda menace in 1835. By the middle of 20th century, the historical gundas of Banarasi have been erased or controlled effectively.

Here is a tea garden at Mirik in North Bengal which is not only one of the oldest in India, but also one of the finest tea producer in the country.

Early 1870s, after William Lloyd purchased the land, the layers in the mountain were cleared for tea bushes and for making settlements for workers. Named as Rangdoo Tea Estate, the first batch of excellent tea was processed in its now heritage factory in 1888.

Teas from Rangdoo made a great impression on the tea auctioneers of London. Teas from the gardens here in North Bengal were served exclusively at Buckingham palace and to most of the globally famous tea lovers of the time like Queen Elizabeth, Jwaharlal Nehru and Nikita Krushchev. Within a short span of time, popularity of Rangdoo teas soared in the London tea auctions and it was called the only "Okay Tea".

The tea estate was therefore rechristened to "Okayti Tea Estate". Okayti still produces globally appreciated teas and houses one of the oldest tea factory in the region. It is now an organic estate.

Gopaldhara Tea Estate in north east is under Okayti. Thurbo Tea Estate in the east is also under Okayti.

75 years and going strong. Land Rovers are the king of the road from Maneybhanjan to Sandakphu and further up. They are now the iconic heritage of Darjeeling.

Land Rovers were originally brought to Darjeeling in the waning period of colonial influence of 1950s by British Tea Planters. There are presently 33 Land Rovers plying in this area, including Land Rovers of 1954 starting from the Series I to Series IIA.

These workhorses were built of Birmabright, a lightweight rustproof alloy of aluminium and magnesium. This material was used because of the post second World War shortage of steel, while there was a plentiful supply of aircraft aluminium.

Alaka Bil (āĻ…āĻ˛āĻ•āĻž āĻŦāĻŋāĻ˛). Amghata.

Hard to believe now that this was during the times of Raja Krishnachandra, the old Alakananda river which was the distributary of Jalangi river before emptying herself into Bhagirathi.

Alakananda was therefore considered a sacred river, equivalent to Ganga. There used to be a huge gathering of people on Poush sankranti, Baruni and Dashahara for taking a dip in this holy river.

Today Alakananda has lost all her connections with Jalangi and Bhagirathi. Transformed into a lake. Known now as Alaka Bil.

Green Step Tourism is happy to curate a tour to these areas around Amghata, on Holi. Rural tourism brings out the deep rooted cultural and social history of pockets in our country.
