A wild orchid (Vanda tessellata) blooming in Bibhutibhushan Wildlife Sanctuary (aka Parmadan forest).
It is a misconception that orchids grow only in the cooler climates. This Vanda does particularly well in our climate. The other place I know where it was blooming in April was our rooftop. Do try to collect it from the wild and give it a place in your garden. It is very easy to grow. Also, orchids are not parasitic plants. They are epiphytes, which means they do not steal the food of the host. They only use the host plant as an anchor. They can grow only when the roots are exposed to air and light.
Very few nature enthusiasts venture out in the scorching heat. Yet, those who do get to see extraordinary beauties of nature.
What sets apart Bibhutibhushan from other Bengali writers is his compassion for the natural world and his ability to see beauty in the wilderness. He would have been proud to see a sanctuary named after him. The sad part is that the State Government chose to keep parakeets and foreign Cockatoos in cages inside the sanctuary. Such stupid acts only show that we vote nincompoops and illiterates to power.

Last weekend we had the pleasure of organizing the Bakkhali Coastal Camp for Birdwatchers' Society. It was a fun-filled, exciting and enriching weekend with lots of adventure, bird-watching and adda-sessions. The camp led by some of the veteran birders and coastal bird experts from the Birdwatchers' Society was a huge success.
The sighting of the Great Knots, Red Knots and Broad-billed Sandpipers on the first day helped to build-up the momentum.
However, the sighting of the extremely rare Nordmann's Greenshank (Tringa guttifer) and Eurasian Oystercatcher(Haematopus ostralegus) on the second day put everyone on cloud nine.

On 31st Dec 2023, we completed exactly one year of our short guided birding walks. These walks were mostly conducted in bird habitats which were within a few hours of driving distance from Kolkata. All the walks were conducted on Sundays and in very small groups. Over the span of a year, we have conducted around 25 guided birding tours in and around Kolkata. Except for a few overnight tours to Sundarban and Bakkhali, the rest of the tours were all day tours. We have meticulously noted all the observations in ebird and have shared the same with all our guests. Statistics tell us that we uploaded 59 checklists and spotted 229 species of birds during the tours.
The fact that we offered guided birding walks(that too paid) to well-known hotspots around the city puzzled and offended several people including many seasoned birders. Their response on our social media handles were far from encouraging. Yet, we stuck to our routine and we kept getting repeat guests. Even if we have not been able to provide them great insight into the world of birds, we have definitely provided them a good Sunday outing.
Another thing which we did religiously was that we never promised any bird species on any of our tours. "If you like to explore with us, join us" was our motto. Yet, we got most of the species in the coveted list.
We would like to thank all our guests who woke up very early in the morning to join our birding walks. Some of you even drove for long distance to join the tours. Thank you all. Let us hope we will be able to sustain our guided birding walks this year too.
