Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is located About 16 km east of Sulthan Bathery, Wayanad district, north Kerala. Best time to visit here is June to October. Major attraction of this place is freely roaming elephants and tigers. This is an ideal place to watch groups of wild elephants. The sanctuary is spread over 345 sq km is green rich plants. Forest Department gives opportunities of Elephant riding for visitors. We can see there different kinds of deer, monkeys, birds etc at a closer view.

Pookkot lake

Pookkot lake is located 3 km south of Vythiri town, Wayanad district. Tourist season is August to May. This is a natural fresh water lake which is surrounded by evergreen forest of rare plants. Tourists can also avail of boating facilities, children's park, and a shopping centre for handicrafts. The lake has an area of 8.5ha. and the maximum water depth is 6.5mtrs. This lake is three kms south of Vythiri.

Edakkal Caves

Edakkal Caves is located three kilometers from Ambalavayal which is 25 kilometers from Kalpetta. Edakkal caves in the Ambukuthi Hills in North Kerala, considered to be one of the earliest centers of human habitation. Inside the cave we could see ancient stone scripts, pictorial wall inscriptions of human and animal figures with peculiar headdresses, the swastik form, symbols and cave drawings of human figures, wheels, bows, knives, trees and so on.

Pazhassi Raja tomb

Pakshipathalam as the name refers is an abode of variety of birds. It is located 7 km northeast of Thirunelli. It is about 32 km from Mananthavady. The altitude of the place is 1740m above sea level. There are also opportunities for trekking in this area.

Kuruvadweep

Kuruvadweep is a group of small islands forming 950 acres of evergreen forest. It is 17 kms far from Mananthavady in the northern district of Wayanad. In these islands, we could find variety of vegetations, wild flowers, rare herbal plands, and fresh water lakes. These islets are also the abode of migratory birds. We could find our national bird, parrots and various butterfly species. Trekking is also possible here. No doubt Kuruvadweep is the best spot for nature lovers in Wayanad.

Neelimala

Neelimala is located in the southeastern part of Wayanad. Neelimala can be called as trekkers delight, as it is opening different options for trekking routes. Best time to be there is just after the rains in June / July. At the top of Neelimala, the spectacle is a incredible view to the Meenmutty falls. On the way up to the Neelimala viewpoint, one would have the company of the coffee plantations on either side and further up, small property of ginger and areca nut.

Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak is located near Meppadi in the southern part of Wayanad. It is the tallest of peaks in the region with a height of 2100 meters. The climb up the Chembra Peak is an enlivening experience, as it unfolds wide area of land of Wayanad as one goes up to its summit.

Banasura Sagar Dam

Banasura Sagar Dam is considered as the largest earth dam in India. The dam is located close to the Karalad Lake. An interesting feature here is a set of islands that were formed when the lake flooded the surrounding areas. Trekking point is also there near to this dam.

As the name suggests, land and water have struck an extraordinary kinship at Thusharagiri (mist capped peaks). The plantation destination that abounds in rubber, arecanut, pepper, ginger and spices, is also a trekkers delight. Trekkers start early morning from the second waterfall on the hills and climb up through the pristine dense evergreen forests teeming with exotic birds and animals to reach Vythiri in Wayanad district by evening.

Nellyampathi

From the town of Nenmara in Palakkad district, the cloud-caressed peaks of the majestic Nelliyampathy hill ranges are a sight to behold. The height of the hills ranges from 467 m to 1572 m. To reach Nelliyampathy, one has to take the road starting from Nenmara that proceeds to the Pothundy Dam. There are about 10 hairpin bends that have to be negotiated on the way to Nelliyampathy.

The Pothundy Dam is a picturesque locale with facilities for boating and is a nice option as a picnic place. As the Ghat road winds its way up to Nelliyampathy, at certain places there are viewpoints from where the vast stretches of Palakkad district are visible with its extensive paddy fields forming a verdant carpet. It also offers a splendid view of the Palakkad Gap, which is a geographical phenomenon in the Western Ghats formation in this region, bringing into view, parts of the adjoining State of Tamilnadu.

On the way up, those interested in bio farming can take a close look at the privately managed farms and also vast expanses of tea estates managed by different plantation companies. The hills of Nelliyampathy are also well known for its orange cultivation.

Privately owned hotels and resorts are located at various points, as one goes up the hills of Nelliyampathy. The bio-farms located here are a major landmark as one proceeds up before reaching the topmost point at Palagapandi estate. The estate has a quaint bungalow, built during the period of the British rule in India, and has now been converted into a private owned resort. At Kaikatty, a community hall is available, which is usually used as a base by those interested in trekking.

Not far away from Palagapandy is Seetharkundu where one can have a fantastic valley view, and a 100 m high waterfall providing an added attraction. From Palagapandy, one can trek or go by jeep to reach Mampara; another breathtaking vantage point at Nelliyampathy. The area in and around Palagapandy estate has tea, cardamom and coffee plantations with adjoining hills allowing one to catch a glimpse of the wildlife in the form of Indian gaur, elephants, leopards, giant squirrel etc. and is also a paradise for birdwatchers.

Malampuzha Garden:

It is located 12km north of Palakkad town, on the lower hills of the Western Ghats. It is set amidst picturesque surroundings and beautiful picnic spots. The Malampuzha Dam, described as the ‘Temple of modern age” by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of India. Beautiful rose gardens and amusement park for children have been set around the reservoir.”Yakshi”, the work of Kerala’s famous Sculptor Kanai Kunhiraman is also displayed in the garden. Boating, fishing and various water spot facilities are also available here. Malampuzha is also known as the headquarters of the inland fisheries activities of Kerala. Dhoni located 15km from Palakkad . There is a waterfall on top of the Dhoni hills, which could be reached by a 3 hour long trek from the bottom of the hills. Trekking is the best way to explore the splender of this hilly terrain. Dhoni is famous for its farm house with exotic rare breeds of cattle.
