On the 7th of November, 2022, the provincial government of New Brunswick announced a brand new immigration pilot project: the New Brunswick Critical Worker Pilot (NBCWP).

The pilot (a joint project between federal and provincial governments) aims to address critical worker shortages in New Brunswick. The pilot is special in that it will not just provide economic immigration to the province, but will also guarantee settlement services (including skills and language training) for newcomers who arrive through the project.

Along with addressing critical labour shortages, New Brunswick is concerned with retaining newcomers, and recognizes that meaningful work is a key factor in doing so; this pilot is a first step towards addressing both issues. The NBCWP will work with six selected employers in New Brunswick:

Cooke Aquaculture Inc.;
Groupe Savoie Inc.;
Groupe Westco;
Imperial Manufacturing;
J.D. Irving Ltd.; and
McCain Foods.
These employers were selected for their impeccable track record in the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NBPNP), good immigrant recruitment practices, and because they already have the necessary settlement programs in place. As part of their participation, these employers must:

Have robust settlement plans for housing and transportation to best support the successful establishment of candidates in their new jobs and communities, with strong commitments to long-term retention;
Have comprehensive human resources planning for recruiting and hiring skilled international talent, and for on-the-job skills enhancement;
Provide up to 200 hours of language training, as required, to candidates; and
Offer guidance and support to candidates who may wish to pursue their Canadian secondary education equivalency.
The five-year pilot program will be monitored and evaluated regularly so that it remains responsive to immigration needs and delivers the desired outcomes for the province.

Canada is reopening the border to fully vaccinated tourists this summer.

Summary of new policies:

Fully vaccinated U.S. tourists can enter Canada starting August 9
Hotel quarantine policy ending August 9
Fully vaccinated children of Canadians, and other exempt travellers to have amended quarantine starting August 9
Fully vaccinated tourists from all countries can enter September 7
India flight ban extended to August 21
More airports accepting international flights

Canada has topped the U.S. as the most attractive destination for foreign workers, according to a report on global talent.

The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and The Network surveyed a total of 209,000 people in 190 countries.

Their report suggests the COVID-19 pandemic played a big role in affecting where foreign workers prefer to work. In general, less people are interested in working abroad due to the pandemic. Only 50 per cent of people showed interest in working abroad between October and December 2020. In 2018, it was 57 per cent, and in 2014 it was 64 per cent.

Newfoundland and Labrador are looking to attract and retain new immigrants to address its aging and declining population.

The province may not typically be an immigrant’s first choice when immigrating to Canada. That is reserved for the more popular provinces such as Ontario and B.C.

As a consequence, the province is looking to boost its immigration efforts. Immigration has become a priority among political party campaigns as we approach the provincial election date on February 13.

The Liberal Party in the province is promising that they will welcome triple the number of newcomers in the next five years. The Progressive Conservatives also promised to have high immigration targets.

Immigrants in the province are arguably the best placed to offer ideas to address the immigration problem. CBC’s Here & Now, a television news program based in the province, held an immigration-focused panel.

International students who complete their entire postsecondary program online will now be eligible for the three-year open work permit after graduation.

Canada is making it easier for international student graduates to be eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) during the pandemic. Before, online learning could not count towards a PGWP application, but that has all changed.
