Hazrat Mahal, as she is known to history, was the Queen of the unfortunate king Wajid Ali Shah. She was the mother of Prince Birjis Quder, the eldest surviving son of the monarch. Before marriage her name was Muhammadi Khanum. Muhammadi Khanum is said to belong to a poor Syed family, descendants of Prophet Muhammad. This is also corroborated by the King giving her the title of Iftikhar-un-nisa (the Pride of all Women) at the time of marriage. The King of the land married her at the age of 14 for her exceptional beauty and purity of descent. After her only child Birjis Quder was born, her husband gave her the title of Hazrat Mahal, the Revered Lady. She has since been known by the sober name Hazrat Mahal which aptly describes her legendary personality in just two words.

When Wajid Ali Shah was ordered by the British to step down from the throne, she wanted him to resist. She preferred losing the kingdom, going any way, on the battlefield. But her husband thought differently. Handing over the kingdom to the British, the King of Avadh left for Calcutta on way to England to try getting it back by pleading. But this made the valiant queen only go ahead single-handed. Within a year in 1857, when her faithful subjects revolted against the British Hazrat Mahal at once took up the leadership. At popular request she allowed her son Prince Birjis Quder, then 14 years old to be crowned King of Avadh on July 5, 1857 Hazrat Mahal herself assumed charge as his guardian and regent.

To forge national unity on a countrywide basis the Queen Regent even agreed to break away from the traditions of the previous Kings of Avadh. On behalf of her son she sent on August 14, 1857 Abbas Mirza as an envoy with a token subsidy to the Moghul Emperor at Delhi. The following letter was sent in the name of King Birjis Quder:

"My Lord! This humble self has wiped out the Feringhees. Few remain in the Bailery Gaard awaiting their doom. I do earnestly hope that Your Imperial Majesty will bestow on me the same kindness that was the privilege of my ancestors. I hope your Your Imperial Majesty will honour me by accepting certain presents (which are being forwarded) along with this supplication."

Emperor Bahadur Shah the then leader of the nation, was only too glad to accept the homage and wrote back:

"My dutiful son Mirza Birjis Quder Bahadur King of Avadh! I do appreciate that in this young age you have done great things. Rest assured that the Seal of Title will be sent to you soon. You will be granted greater territories than your ancestors I do award you the crown."

ZABAAN-E-LUCKNOW

The history of Lucknow is elevated from the Nawabi touch under the Nawabs of Awadh. Lucknow is the epitome of culture and tradition of tahzeeb. IT is famous for its mannerism (tehzeeb) and its refined local dialect (zaban-e-awadh). The city has culture of emotional warmth, etiquette and courtesy. The people of lucknow prides themselves of being a part of the culture “pehle aap” .
Under the influence of Nawabs urdu developed as the most refined language which was not only the language of the elite but was also adopted by the commeners to show gratitude to each other. This genetic heredity of the people of Lucknow makes them to be identified as the people with most polished speech. The credit goes to the traditions of the Nawabs of Awadh who took keen interest in every walks of life and played their role to make it attain a degree of sophistication. They looked forward to each step of attaining perfection.
The poets of urdu took the language to a great height. Meer Taqi Meer who after serving the Mughals migrated to the Nawabi court in Lucknow at the king’s invitation. This poet lived at the time when the urdu language was at heights. This versatile poet combined his expression to Persian idioms and imagery and gave life to a new elite language known as Rekhta. He is often compared he utmost famous urdu poet Mirza Ghalib.
“ Rekhta ke tumhi ustaad nahi ho Ghalib ,
Kehte hain agle zamane me koi Mir bhi tha”.
Other famaous poets of urdu are Khwaja Haidar Ali Atish, Amir Meenai and safi lucknavi and Mirza Hadi Ruswa the aurthor of “umrao jaan ada” often considered as the first urdu novel by the ctitcs. These experts in the language took it to new standards. Urdu poetries, shayri’s and mushayaras flourished under the reign of Awadhi Nawabs.
The matter of consideration today is that this rich language is losing its importance in the culture today due to the western impact and the the change in people’s attitudes and attributes. Urdu is the pride of Lucknow and for what the city is known for. The cultural heritage needs to be preserved from getting into the part of global debris so as to make the country stand high on its Incredible foundation of richness in culture and heritage.
As well stated by Ahmad shah Bismil Allahbadi
“kya jhalkati hai zaban-e- Lucknow,
Saaf dikhlaati hai shaan-e-lucknow……..

All western media do is to defame India in their country. All they show is “Hungry India-Poor India”. The generalization of India is done in such a way that whenever a foreigner comes to our country he just wants to see the poor side of our country. Why they do all this? God Knows! May be its just a propaganda by western media to show India as a third world.

But they forget that India is a Great Country and was much happier when they robbed us. Definitely we have problems regarding the poor side of our country and we are working on it. But that’s not how whole India looks like. India is no “Slumdog”. India was once called “Golden Bird” and we will bring our days back. All western Media do is to show only poor side of our country but here we have few photographs that will show the Real side of India and Indian cities that foreign media won’t show.
