Cuisine / Special Food of Bihar

The cuisine of the state is an interesting mix of North and East Indian cuisine. Rice, pulses and roti are common food consumed by the people of this state.
A favorite breakfast all over the state is Chura Dahi (flattened rice and curd) taken together with sugar or jaggery.
One exclusive item of this state is Sattu (gram powder) commonly taken as mixture with water, salt and lime juice. The sweetened Sattu is also very commonly consumed.
Other speciality is Litti Chokha.
There are several special sweets that are made all over the state for special occasions like Khaja, Tilkut, Anarsa, and Thekuwa.

Sonepur Cattle Fair

The Sonepur Cattle Fair (Hindi: सोनपुर पशु मेला) is held on Kartik Poornima (the full moon day) in the month of November in Sonepur, Bihar, on the confluence of river Ganges and Gandak.[3] It is also known as Harihar Kshetra Mela and it attracts visitors from all over Asia. Till date, it is the biggest cattle fair of Asia and stretches on from fifteen days to one month. It has its origins during ancient times. This is when Chandragupta Maurya(340 - 297 BCE) used to buy elephants and horses across the river Ganges.
Now a days it is a place of buying and selling of different varieties of Buffalo, Cows, Dogs, Birds and other pets. Along with trade there are lots of activities to enjoy ranging from Jhoola to theatre. Every day cultural programs are organised by BSTDC (Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation).
This is perfect place for handicrafts lovers.

This year it is going to start in the second week of November and continue around one month.

So go and enjoy this great fair with Litti Chokha dipped in Fresh Desi ghee.

New Developments by BSTDC to promote Bihar tourism-
1. Actress Rekha is being contacted to be the brand ambassador
2. Patna to Rajgir round trip day tour bus service is being provided by BSTDC at very less cost to maximize the footfall in Rajgir Mahotsav
3. Trekking trip on the route of Gautam Buddha's travel was organised last week, was a great success. 13 km route with two halts, great arrangement by the corporation.
Hope these initiatives will attract more number of tourists to see 'Blissful Bihar'.
