Tisra is the 3rd in the series of ridges between Solang and Dhundi, made up by Stairmaster and Patalsu, which drop to the south off the Beas Kund Range. The western aspects contain some incredible lines and gorgeous topography, but all are steep and thoroughly exposed. Due to its severity, Tisra is destined to remain a springtime mission. Winter is just too frightening, and although there are undoubtedly safe powder lines, most of the west face is prime avalanche terrain. The stable conditions of spring, however, transform the mountain into a tantalizing and achievable proposition.

The top of Tisra Peak is amongst the most scenic locations in the Kullu, with Hanuman Tibba piercing the sky directly across the valley and a dozen other enticing peaks within easy reach. In spring, the quality of the snow on the west face deteriorates rapidly after midday, becoming too soft and grabby, so make tracks from the summit before this occurs. Most tourers will find the optimum line by backtracking along the ascent route, as far as the prominent bulge. Once you are past this sub peak, you can drop down to a gorgeous ramp and finish with a beautiful, steep face above the Seri Nala.

Tours into the Hampta Valley follow the ancient trade route, as well as being a popular summer hiking trail between the Kullu Valley and Eastern Lahaul.

The Hampta Valley makes an excellent springtime tour. There are numerous idyllic campsites; the views of Indrasan, Deo Tibba and other high peaks are outstanding and route finding is quick and uncomplicated.

A plethora of lovely, open slopes make this a prized tour for all intermediate level skiers and snowboarders. The access is uncomplicated, only one serious avalanche slope requires negotiating and the views are mind blowing. With a decent food and fuel supply, you could camp up high for a week, exploring slope after slope, all the way to Deo Tibba. Many of the descents are short and sweet, but the option to link a sustained pitch is always there, particularly on the final run back down to Sethan.
