Udupi lies at the foothills of the Western Ghats. These majestic mountains stretch 1,600 km along India’s western coast, covering an area of 160,000 km². The Western Ghats play a vital role in India’s climate, blocking monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea and resulting in rainfall along the coast. Within this region, you’ll find the Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary, named after the temple deity “Lord Someshwara.” If you’re interested in scenic beaches, Udupi has some gems nestled in these lush hills.

These mangroves were planted about 15 years ago by the Karnataka Forest Department and have since flourished.
