Tomorrow is Vishu in Kerala…
What we celebrate as Vishu tomorrow is celebrated in different names across our sacred land…. Whichever name u call it.. it is the same for us... our ways of worship and celebration may differ but we are one people and so are most of our main celebrations. Here in Kerala… Vishu comes right after harvest. Our gratitude to Bhagawan for this golden harvest is done as Vishnu Pooja since ancient times.
This Vishnu Pooja, with time, became known as Vishu and is also the beginning of a new year. Krishna reigns supreme on Vishu… It is our glorious Kannan that we must see first in the morning in Vishu Kani.

Usually, the women will stay up late at night preparing the Vishu Kani. The main idea for the Vishu Kani is to offer the bountiful harvest that we have just received like fruits, vegetables, rice, lentils, water, kumkum, chandhan, kajal, konna poovu (golden shower), coconut, sweet appam, new vastram, money, gold, and of course lighted lamps .. to Bhagawan. We also place our sacred text be it Bhagawatham or Bhagawad Gita or Ramayanam, praying that we may be blessed with more understanding of life to lead us onto moksha. You can also place tools of your trade there to be blessed by Bhagawan. Vaalkannadi, a mirror with a handle is kept facing us in the Kani. This symbolizes the Vedic tenet of looking at and within yourself, this introspection and meditation will lead you to understand that Bhagawan is within you. As children, we were told that the small kadhali bananas were for Unni Kannan ( Baby Krishna). He is always the first one to come and take a look at the Kani we have kept and he loves two things most. Kadhali bananas and Unni appam. Along with him comes Unni Ganapathi who loves jackfruit in all its forms and Unni Karthikeyan whose love for luscious, juicy, sweet mangoes is well known.

However, as you know Bhagawan is pleased with just a sip of water if given with love and devotion. So you keep what is available to you. As long as what you offer is with bhakthi… it is accepted with blessings for you and ur family. Kanni Konna.. those glorious Vishu flowers are said to represent Mahalakshmi and where Vishnu sits there must be Maha Lakshmi. All members present in the house woke up early in the morning, usually at around 3:30/4:00 a.m with eyes closed to see the Kani, guided by the women. Seeing Kani first thing in the morning assures the person’s well-being for the rest of the year

Then we burst crackers… and the elders of the house will give the younger ones a coin(this depends on the financial capacity of the family). This is called Vishu Kaineettam and in return, the youngsters touch the feet of elders to seek blessings. After that, the Vishu Kani is taken out and shown to all living beings outside, the house trees, plants, cattle, insects, animals … etc. The fruits and vegetables kept as Kani are given to cows. Grains are given away in charity and so is money to all those who come home. No Hindu celebration is complete without a sumptuous feast….the Vishu Sadhya.
TO ALL MY DEAR PEOPLE HERE

KRISHNA KRIPA ON ALL OF YOU
